I agree and willingly admit that I am a cheapskate, though I prefer the term "not frivolous". If a steak is going to cost me close to $100, it better feed my family well, ya know?

I refuse to pay for atmosphere when it comes to restaurants.

I think DDD needs to spend less time on wikipedia and more time looking for restaurants in Utah outside the gastronomy family.

Ask TripleD about the Taqueria around the corner from my house.

There are several restaurants that I would consider very good.

The Bombay House or the Himalayan Kitchen are both very good indian food. Good spices, good texture and mix of high quality foods. Now, neither are very expensive so if you are looking for high end price, these are not the places to go. But for $15-20, it provides food that could expect to be more expensive.

Faustinas is actually a very nice Italian restaurant just on the edge of downtown SLC. Good variety and a more modern dining experience. Cafe Molise would also fit in to this mode of very good italian for SLC.

Five Alls is also a fabulous french restaurant. It has struggled a bit in the last couple of years but at its peak, very good.

With all that said, SLC has a long ways to go to compete with any large city, but for what it is and what it has, it is not bad.

I went to Cafe Molisse for the first time last Summer and wasn't impressed at all.

I've only eaten at Faustina once, but I remember it being good. I also like Em's on Capitol Hill.

Faustinas and Cafe Molise are not that good.

Not when he's got me as an advisor.

I fast when I visit Utah. Let's leave gastronomy types out of this: I can't even find very many good dives.

all you namby pambys make me sick... Yes SLC does not have the upscale cuisine that chicago, new york or LA have. That is obvious. But when it comes to dives there are plenty.

                          Suks diner - great breakfast
                          Cotton Bottom - Awesome burgers
                          Al Fornos - Great italian

That is just to name a few.

Next time you're in town go to Moochies and get their Meatball Sandwich or Philly Cheesesteak.

In fact tell me when that next time is and it'll be my treat.

I think this thread keeps getting off track.

SU's original question was not whether you could find good food in SLC. Also, in my response to him, I stated that you can definitely get good food in Utah.

The question was whether there was a haute equivalent in SLC. The answer to that still seems to be no, as most of the examples of good eats that people are citing consist of middle-tier local food.

I don't think anyone was ever saying that everything you eat in Utah is unappealing.

Some of these suggestions sound very interesting and I am definitely up for checking them out. I will be in Utah in December for about 7 or 8 days. I will need to eat something while I'm there.
