Some good new places try that haven't been mentioned here. They get into the surrounding scene, although they obviously hadn't yet made it to cedar city, the pizza capital of Utah.

A few highlights off the top of my head:
Takashi
Pago
Mahider (Ethiopian, which i think is a lot of fun...Can't believe I've never heard of this place)
Caputo's (I know people have mentioned this, but apparently they have a world class salami maker? I have no idea what makes a world class salami, but I'm pretty sure I need to know now)
Low Brow and caffe d'bolla for great coffee

Forage, copper onion, oh Mai (the sardine banh mi???), and some other standbys get some nice reviews, but the above are the ones I didn't have on my list yet.

wtf is mikado doing on that list? it's always awful. and communal is pretty mediocre, imo. some good places mentioned, though. alamexo is worth a try.

Also, the Dodo is an example of a food scene? It is a nice cafe but it is like eating at Corner Bakery.

I enjoy communal and 712. Silver and Handle in Park City are good. Forage is obviously good.

There are little gems hidden here and there.

I know how you feel about podcasts, but it's still worth a listen if you like food. They didn't talk much about the Dodo (I agree with you, by the way)--I think they liked it because of its commitment to local food.

Take caputo's, for example: a very nice sandwich. Eaten there many times myself and enjoy the meal. Is it an example of SLCs best? Does someone absolutely have to check out Tony Caputos when they are in town? Do they serve something that merits special attention? When people are visiting from other cities it doesnt even dawn on me that we have to go to Tony Caputos for a salami sandwich and a side of salad.

Forage, different story altogether. Forage is a great experience.

SLC has maybe a handful of Forages, a lot of Tony Caputos.

There is no scene.

are you counting coffee shops and meat distributors as members of the SLC food scene?

what about some of the better vending machines or supermarket delis? SLC has some pretty sick vending machines.

I'll excuse the coffee ignorance and the other part of your comment is intentionally silly. They're talking about local coffee roasters, artisan cheeses and breads, and I admittedly don't get the salami thing, but I can imagine some sort of art to it. Those things aren't part of a local food scene?

(They also get into local breweries--very good--and wineries--not so much--but i have zero interest in those so i didn't mention them. Still...part of the food scene.)

i dont know, I would say no. Can you name a major or mid-major city in the US that doesnt have a good coffee shop? I guess I dont see any "scene" in SLC. A "scene" in my mind would be a proliferation of several similar styles of restaurants, creating a niche for that location. The gastro-pub scene, the fresh mex scene, etc.

as for that list, I agree with many of the inclusions.
