  • Another few tips (I can't believe we're 1000 posts in and we're just now sharing tips). Also, I'm no 1.5 K/D, but that doesn't mean these tips aren't useful!

    1. I try to avoid long hall ways or straight aways. It takes forever to go down them and people are always popping up at one end or another to kill you. I never want people (like Niku) to have an unobstructed view at me from far away. Perfect example of a hallway to avoid is on skidrow. Actually, there are two straight-aways on skid row to avoid.

    2. I used to have the tendency to keep my gun pointed lower while I walked around b/c (unconsciously) I felt it was obstructing my field of view. But then I always had to raise my gun to fire and I was losing a lot of one-on-one battles. So now I always keep my sights at chest or head level so you're ready to go. Even if you don't have time to aim down the sights, you can just pull the trigger and fire from the hip.

    3. I want to echo filsdepac's advice re: shotguns. ALWAYS have a shot gun equipped as your secondary and ALWAYS switch to your secondary when you're in a tight spot, or even if you're just getting ready to turn a corner. Nothing beats a shot gun close quarters. if you're aim is decent you will only need one shot, and you don't even really need to aim down the sights. This tip alone (which I only recently began using) has helped raise my K/D by a ton. I'd say over the last two weeks I've been hovering around a 1.5 K/D (and I can say that since no one can confirm or deny it ).
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

If I could ever figure out how to use a capture card, I'd be willing to do walkthroughs on certain maps, showing definite DO NOT ENTER zones (every map has a few places you should never, ever go), claymore positioning, strategy approach, etc. for single players. In fact, I may just put together something like that - minus video - for this thread anyway, both to share my tactics and pick the brains of others. I can download some maps and edit them to show positioning and angles of claymores at any rate, and highlight the DO NOT ENTER zones. As well as the "double jump" spots.

I am murder on that hallway. Two claymores to protect my back and I can camp at the end with the stairway and dumpster for a long time.

The shotgun advice is priceless. I prefer akimbo rangers, but that's a personal preference.

So this was my next question. What are people's shottie preferences? We have one vote for akimbo rangers. Others?

I've noticed you there in the past. What are you firing down the hall, M16? I imagine you've got to stay on your belly to avoid getting shot in the head from down stairs.

I'm a double ranger guy too, but that's only b/c I don't have the 1887s yet. I assumed that the 1887s would be better, but perhaps they're not? Otherwise why do you have them? I would at least like them for what seems like a much faster reload time.

I actually think there are 3 hallways on that map. Obviously, upstairs and the tunnel. But the downstairs "Hallway" should be avoided if you are just trying to run through. If you are claymore, scavenger, and shotty, feel free to hang out in the books section and blow the shiz out of passer by's.

akimbo 1887s the range on those things is sick. Its like a Sniper shotgun. Ok not that bad but close. I am amazed at how far away I get killed from with those things.

I do avoid the book store. I can get a few kills in there, but I never escape alive. It always ends my killstreak perk attempts! And you're right, not only are there close range enemies in there, but people can fire at you from across the courtyard too! I just stay away completely these days.

I am spaz 12 with grip. I found I am most effective with that. One shot kill 99% of the time.

How many rounds before reload? How fast is the reload? Rangers take forever to reload.

I stand at the bottom of the top staircase. Impossible to see, and you can fire and kill way before anybody gets you. Then strafe to the right behind the dumpster to reload. Put one claymore at the exit to the tunnel, the other in the building to your left (the one with the window that faces down the tunnel) just inside the entrance. You are protected from most angles now (the seldom-used entry from the big courtyard being the exception). I usually have a TAR with Danger Close on that map. TAR has the highest damage of any weapon, when you account for fire rate and actual damage.

The problem with the 1887s are two fold. First, you have to cock them once before you can fire shot one - so if you forget to switch weapons quickly when you spawn, you are a dead man walking if you try to switch in the heat of battle. Second, if you are facing more than one person, the reload time is long enough that it can cause problems. The ranger reload time is faster too (although the 1887s carry more ammo). It's a definite trade-off. The 1887s seem to have a slightly longer range, so if I am using a shotgun on Wasteland or Afghan I may use the 1887s.

1887s purely because you twirl them in you hand after you fire.

That hallway is my no-go zone. I will cut through the bookstore to go up the stairs, but otherwise I will never go through.

One of the tricks I use on most maps is to let people know where I am - then anticipate where they will try to come flank me and get them with a claymore - then anticipate that they will try again and be wary of the claymore so find a spot I can plant a second claymore to really mess with their heads.

                          • Here is something that pisses me off -- I'll sometimes place a claymore at my six to help watch my back. Even if the dude survives the blast, I will hear the claymore, turn around and try to finish him off. But sometimes I will get killed, I will watch the kill cam and my murderer will have shot the claymore and then entered the room and shot me in the back... but I never heard the exploding claymore. That pisses me off. Claymores don't explode without a serious report.

I actually thought that was the reload. Now the gun's lost some of its coolness factor for me.

8 rounds. Reloads can be a bitch. I try to never spend the full 8 before reload and I will hide if I do. I switch guns way more than I reload.
