That's would be on brand, for sure.Originally posted by Donuthole View Post

I still love the series. And I still think Episode 4:3 is some of the best TV I've ever watched. But I think I noted that Episodes 4:4 and 4:5 were let downs above. And it didn't get any better.
I'm hoping Season 5 is badass, but there's some definite LOST potential a-brewing.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

Doesn't seem like many are watching The Great, but I have to put in a plug for Season 2. It is even better than the first season. It's basically entirely fictional at this point, but it is one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time, but also strangely touching at times. The writing and acting is superb across the board. Here's the trailer for Season 2 if you are interested (the whole season dropped on Hulu in November):Originally posted by UVACoug View PostHighly, highly recommend The Great on Hulu. It is hilarious. It is a satirical depiction of the events leading up to the Russian coup that deposed Peter III and replaced him with his estranged wife Catherine the Great. Not very historically accurate at all, but a lot of fun. Elle Fanning plays Catherine and Nicholas Hoult plays Peter. Hoult, in particular, is hilarious. One of the best things I've seen in a while. It is written by the same guy that wrote The Favourite and has a similar tone, so if you like that you may enjoy this show.
Here's a trailer that I think gets the tone of the show right:
Warning: It is very crass with lots of swears (and some nudity) if that isn't your thing.

We just finished the season. Overall we really liked it. I thought the plot was very original and the parody about true crime podcasts was spot on. I'm not a huge fan of Martin Short but he really didn't bug me here. A couple of the middle episodes were slow but the last one was hilarious.Originally posted by bluegoose View Post
I've watched the first two episodes. So good. Martin and Short are fantastic, and Selena Gomez is surprisingly good. I think this is the first show I've seen her in since the wizards of waverly place.
I recommend it. Looking forward to another season if there is one."...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Caught the first two episodes of Mormon No More. Deals with LGBTQ experiences in Mormonism and with active members leaving the church. The first two episodes are very BYU heavy. I'm not sure what I'd label it. I guess part reality show and part documentary. The main focus is a lesbian couple who were both BYU students and who married men when young, then saw each other across the cultural hall in their 30's and went "oh shit, I think I'm gay." Left their husbands and are now engaged and raising their combined 7 kids together. The ex-husbands feature prominently as well.
On the side there are vignettes of gay BYU students and so far these have been the show's strength. Featured the rainbow lighting of the Y and a pretty gut wrenching story of a suicide and how the victim inspired another gay student to come out during his graduation speech. Overall, the church takes the usual hits. I guess somewhat uniquely, it gets the blame for the women having married young and not having been able to realize their sexuality in time. It gets some occasional back pats as well but generally in the sense that "growing up Mormon was comforting even though it made me naïve."
Really, there's not much they have to say that I disagree with however the method at times is suspect. Firstly, of course they have a podcast and that's so cliche I almost turned it off the minute they let that out. Secondly, they really want to frame this tv experience as authentic but they put things on camera that I don't believe someone valuing true authenticity would put on camera. Case in point, one of the women makes a big deal out of how much she looks up to her mission president and that he's the only person that she loves to whom she hasn't personally come out. She makes the phone call to him on camera. Obviously, since he is not aware it's being filmed, we are not allowed to hear his end of the conversation. From a very brief conversation, she infers that he's somewhere between indifferent and wholly unsupportive. The entire conversation was maybe 30 seconds long so it was quite a bit of extrapolation to get there imo. I do not doubt her feelings were real. I do doubt that if she loved and respected him as much as she claimed that she would have committed even that one sided part of the conversation to film. In short, the show devolves to an attention grab too often. Again, there isn't much they have to say that I wouldn't generally agree with, I just find myself doubting their sincerity in the tv effort too often.Last edited by SteelBlue; 06-29-2022, 11:58 AM.

The Old Man with Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow is the best new series I've seen in awhile. Bridges is fantastic as the "I'm too old for this sh**" former military man. So far, I'm not loving the Amy Brenneman character, but the acting is excellent.

Couldn't agree more. It's refreshing to see a formidable protagonist who is not formidable because of his mad ninja skills. He's just better prepared. I also like the actor they got to play the young Jeff Bridges. You look at him and think "yeah, that's the guy from Thunderbolt and Lightfoot".Originally posted by Art Vandelay View PostThe Old Man with Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow is the best new series I've seen in awhile. Exactly. When they first introduced young Dan Chase/Johnny I was wondering if it was Bridges CGIed younger. He nails the unique voice inflection perfectly. Young Lithgow also looks a lot like JL.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

My wife thought the fight scenes in ep.1 were too long and almost unwatchable, but the actors are great and the storyline is compelling. I see that the critics agree (RT at 94%, IMDB at 8.5).Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post. Couldn't agree more. If you haven't seen the first season of Reservation Dogs, go watch it ... and then watch the second season, which is airing now. I think it may be my favorite show of the year so far ... and thats including Better Call Saul, which has always been at the top of my list.
