  • Radiohead starts recording LP8

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8055075.stm

I have great faith that this is the album where Colin saves Big Boots from forever being confined to the scrap heap. The man has heroic powers rivaled only by figures in comic books, and if he could salvage Nude (Big Ideas), I know he's got it in him to do it again. Come on, Coz!

I am by no means any sort of resident Radiohead authority, but what is Colin's role within the band? I thought it was the Thom and Jonny show.

      This is always good news.

I am hopeful that we will hear more Trojan Marching Band on the new LP.

My Radiohead confession: I have not purchased or downloaded (free), to any media devise, a Radiohead track since OK.

(I've watched a few clips on YT, but that's it).

Yet OK is one of my top ten albums of the last twenty years.

        Odd, I know.

Wow. Does this mean you have never heard Kid A? I would be shocked if that were the case.

            Never.

Edit: I'm not bragging, it's just once they got the 'genius' tag, I decided to pass and haven't been back since. Maybe I will try now, maybe not.

              HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!

Dude, I am not kidding around here. You need to go out and get that. As well as In Rainbows. And Hail to the Thief.

              I am almost hyperventilating.

Is there a way to just send it to you? I would be more than happy to just send it all to you.

This is awful news. Simply dreadful. I am glad this is out in the open now so we can help.

Oh, for the most part, it is. But the Coz is a genius, and he's going to single-handedly save Big Boots.

                This is always good news.

I would like to see them substitute The Ohio State marching band for the USC band, but we'll shall see.

But really, it's fun to speculate about the new album. What will we see?

Come to Your Senses - Jonny may finally get his banjo appearance!

Follow Me Around - Ed said they recently started working on this one again

Spooks - instrumental jam may turn into something more substantial; Jonny seemed a bit disappointed that they didn't work on it more during the last sessions

Super Collider - the piano part sounds pretty great, but we've yet to see a full band version, if they're even planning on one.

Slave - sent to Nigel to mix during the IR tour. Still unclear if this is a Thom or Radiohead thing.

Wake Me - recently soundchecked, sound pretty great in the small snippets I've heard

Mornin' Mi Lord - still out there somewhere

Burn the Witch - this apparently has been done for a while. Will the already legendary song make its debut on LP8?!?

Old Reckoner - Ed says they are still working with the old version, and if they let that riff die I will not be pleased

Like a Weapon - another recent soundcheck

Riding a Bullet - see above

Big Boots - as per the initial post, I'm still holding out hope.

True Love Waits - do they take another crack at a full band version?

                Exciting possibilities!

I don't know that it's that odd. There are a few bands who put out an album that I really loved, and then I never really listened to them again. For example, August and Everything After by Counting Crows and the Blue album by Weezer may be among my favorite 20-25 albums ever, and I hardly listened to a second CD from either band.

And Amnesiac. Radiohead of 2000s simply dominates Radiohead of 1990s.

Truthfully, I don't want to see them dredging up studio versions of old songs that have been floating around for years.

That is the beginning of the end when we start seeing that repeatedly.

I am going to throw my hat in the ring for a more technology-centric sound, a la the Kid A and B sessions.

I also wounldn't mind seeing a proper double album. It seems like their albums have very rich stories to tell, and 10 or so songs isn't enough time in which to do it. Why not go the double LP route and take time to establish the message. That also allows them to experiment with more instrumentals, which often serve as great bridges between tracks. You just can't do that as freely with a single LP concept.

I actually purposely left that one off. I think that of the 4 aforementioned, Amnesiac is the least accessible and the worst which with to start jumping in.

They do that on every album, to some extent.

I don't think it's any less accessible than Kid A (in fact, I think it may be more). And if you're going to do Kid A, you might as well do Kid B, right?

Outside of OKC and Kid A, I think Amnesiac has their best work. It's just less coherent than HTTT and less consistent than IR.

But now it feels kinda inauthentic; like when I first listened to Doolittle the whole way through...in 1992.
