  • Today's album update comes from Phil.

Radiohead is heading back to the studio in a week's time to "take stock" of new material and assess when — and how — it should be released to the world.

Drummer Philip Selway told The Canadian Press the band will regroup next Monday to determine how close the followup to "In Rainbows" is to being ready.

"We've been working on material on and off for a year now and we've had the summer off so yes, we're basically taking stock on Monday and seeing what we need to do with the material to move it to those final stages," Selway said in a telephone interview from Amsterdam on Monday.

"We're just returning to it with fresh ears and taking stock of where we are and how close we are to finishing stuff, really, and we won't know till Monday."

The band is working on the eagerly anticipated followup to its seventh album, "In Rainbows," which sent shock waves through the music world in 2007 when it was first released digitally online, through the band's own website, and at an indeterminate "it's up to you" price. The band also streamed a free concert to fans months later on New Year's Eve, and Selway hinted the band might have some more digital or online plans up its sleeves — although he wouldn't say what exactly.

"Whatever we do with any record, it always has to come from the music we've made, whatever we release, and because we're not at that stage at the moment — we haven't finished anything — we don't know how or what's the most appropriate way for getting it out there," he said.

"Then again, you look at the track record of what we've done over the past decade in that area and I suppose, you know, it's probably a safe bet to say there'll be something in there somewhere along the line."

While "In Rainbows" was largely shaped by extensive touring and live experimentation with the songs, Selway said that won't be the case with the new project.

    "Uh, no," he said laughing.

"I don't know what we'll be doing but the process of making 'In Rainbows' — so much came about through what we were doing live — has been quite the opposite so far. But you never know, we might get back together on Monday and after discussing stuff we might just throw this all out and say maybe we need to go back to the drawing board. Who knows, as I say, it's all up in the air at the moment.

"But we've been enjoying what we've been doing."

    • Speaking of scores, Norton also revealed how Radiohead chipped in to create the foundation for the pic's atmospheric music, composed by John O'Brien.

"I'm friends with the guys in Radiohead, And Johnny Greenwood, who did the incredible score for Paul Anderson's 'There Will Be Blood,' met me in London a while back when John (Curran) and I were developing the script," Norton recalls.

"So given the spiritual ties in this film, I started talking to him about this idea: 'What would you use to record this divine-like tuning sound?' And he and Thom (Yorke) had been playing a lot of weird ambient stuff at the time and so, amazingly, they just unloaded tons and tons of files to us of these sound experiments that they had been doing. We just listened to them in awe until John (Curran) eventually got John O'Brien to come in and see what he could make of it."

Hmm. The timing of this would have been close to when they started recording for LP8, so I wonder if these sound bits were stuff they were working on for the new album, or just leftovers from previous records? I can't imagine they would give away something that could potentially be on the record, but there are probably billions of scraps all over Jonny's and Thom's computers (boy what I wouldn't give to get my hands on those for a day). I hope this is some insight into the sound of LP8, because "weird ambient" sounds terrific.

      • Update from Jonny (though I'm guessing this interview was done about the same time as Phil's):

Interviewer: Since you have completed Norwegian Wood, and your solo work will take a pause, what are your feelings about focusing your energies on the new Radiohead album?

Jonny-Well, there's the feeling that the album is already almost finished, once we finish it, we will start considering how to put it in order. That's the current phase we are in, I think.

I: Could you be more specific about the general mood inside the band?

J: Now, well, we are all different individuals, anyway the current state of things is that we are going to take a look at each song from the long list of songs that seem to be finished.. then, next week, everyone will meet, and as we finish them, everything will be almost ready. Which songs need to be changed or replaced, there is also that sort of thing but, we are on the verge of ending it.

I; So, basically it is finished, right?

J: Yes, I guess so. Still, it's possible that everyone comes back to listen to it and say "Still not good". Next week, I will report the result (laughter).

        I. (laughter) Please do so! was there some sort of theme for this album?

J: Theme...? Um... As mentioned, because the work is still being compiled/gathered, I can't really say that there isn't one...

        I: I see.

J: Correspondingly, because we are still too connected to the work, just regarding the album itself we have a weird feeling. At this point in time, it's already a kind of "crushed" pile of incoherent recordings. As we arrange/organize it in many different ways, for the first time the awareness of what we have done will also become visible from that, right?

Last question, the interviewer asks if each person's solo projects are influencing the band's work,
Jonny says of course, and he mentions the Eraser, which after it was finished, it brought a wider range of techniques and possibilities for the whole band.

            • Thom has been seen around Covent Garden the last couple days. Last two DAS posts seem to be allusions to finishing the artwork and track listing, does this mean he and Nigel are mixing? I sure hope so!

              • Phil was on Studio Brussel yesterday talking about Familial.

He did say a few things about Radiohead too:

interviewer: "how is it (meaning the radiohead sessions) going?"

Phil: "well, I think it's going well. I actually listened to some of the new material for the first time this morning, coming back to it with fresh ears. To my ears, it is not complete yet, but I was very happy with what I was listening to."

Interviewer: "OK, and how many songs are finished?"

                Phil: "oh, loads..." (laughs)
Hmm...I guess that could mean a lot of things. Mixing? Mastering? I don't know. What I hope it doesn't mean is that they need more recording session time.

What I am excited about is Jonny saying they have a "long list" of songs and Phil saying they have "loads" of songs finished. I doubt they'll go beyond their usual 10-12 song track list, but we may get more b-sides than In Rainbows yielded.

                • The DAS and tour dates section of Radiohead.com have a new layout. The banner looks like it is probably related to the new artwork (kind of hearkens to the These Are My Twisted Words art, but more fleshed out and with color) or general design of the LP8 era. I think we are getting closer.

Given Thom's rant yesterday about the "fly over states," you may not be seeing them unless you want to come crash on my couch.

                        • There are positive rumblings. The Gilles Peterson comment has yet to be refuted by the band, and now this Julian Munro character with some positive insight.

Is the wait almost over? I'm sure hoping! We've got to be close...
