It is one of the few albums where I can remember exactly where I was when I first heard it, like it was yesterday.
    That was me.

I first heard Kid A on KROQ. If I am not mistaken, KROQ and WXRK broadcasted the US premiere of the disc on the radio (although portions had been iBlipped a few weeks earlier). They played it through in its entirety around a week before it was released. Throughout the broadcast, they had a digitized voiceover....maybe every 40 seconds or so, saying something to the effect of "this is an authorized broadcast...blah blah blah..." The idea was to ruin efforts to digitially pirate the broadcast before the record drop.

Ironically, a digital copy of the initial radio broadcast of Kid A would be a great thing to have for any radiohead enthusiast.

I saw radiohead in 2000 at the Greek Theater and then in 2001 at the Santa Barbara Bowl for the Kid A tour. Freaking amazing. That was a great set of shows. The Greek show was literally a few days after they appeared on SNL doing Idioteque and The National Anthem. Buzz was strong and anticipation was high.

Another interesting thing about the timing of the Greek Theater show....up until that month, Pyramid Song was known simply as The Egyptian Song. Then, one or two shows before the Greek Show, Thom announces the name of the song to the crowd. So, in a sense, I saw one of the first official performances of Pyramid Song. Also, when they played Climbing up the walls, Jonny tuned to some radio station playing a Janet Jackson song. It was pretty funny.

At the subsequent Santa Barbara shows, they really went all out. I saw them do Follow Me Around, pearly*, cinnamon girl, Bulletproof, True Love Waits, Talk Show Host......

    ah, so exciting.

Funny, because I like Treefingers. And I like the intro to The National Anthem is sweet. But it turns into the junior high band room when the teacher steps out half way through for me.

That sort of reminds me of some of the instruments on Life in a Glass House. They get a bit too crazy at times. I like National Anthem's horns though, but I can see what you're saying.

the horns are one of my favorite things about that song. That, and the bass line.

Re-listen to the tune. Think "chaos." There are many theories floating around about that song, but the one that makes the most sense to me is that the song is a metaphor for nationalistic aggression....maybe through war....or at the very least, propaganda and fearmongering (everyone has got....the fear...). The horns...all the shouting, debating, political wrangling....all of it culminating in something cataclysmic.....ending in complete silence. As though a bomb has been dropped. It is actually quite exhausting. Whenever I hear that song, I imagine a montage of dictators and world leaders, famous speeches, and those horrible clips of war that we would see in documentaries....of people dying, prisoners of war, etc. The horns in that song really personify emotion for me more than any other instrument on the album.

I also see how such an interpretation might not fit with the overall tone of the album, but it is also interesting that some of the other lyrical undertones on Kid A reference fear or (we're not scaremongering....this is really happening).

I think Gracie and I have discussed this one before at length. Kid A is a masterpiece. One of the greatest albums of all time.

Quite possibly my favorite RH song. I used to just focus on the bass and let the horn noise kind of float over the top, but now I love get lost in the noise of those messy horns. This is kind of a critical portion in the linear progression of the album for me.

Much easier to get into than the random sounds of Treefingers. I actually skip that one most of the time.
wtf? I might never talk to you again. How in the hell can you skip one of the album's most critical moments? The ideas/thoughts/concepts of Kid A are nothing without this important juncture in the music.

That sort of reminds me of some of the instruments on Life in a Glass House.
Also in my RH top 10 songs. RIP Humphrey.

This was played again a few weeks ago. Not the intro to EEIRP bit, but rather the awesome Thom acoustic version.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

I had never thought about it like that. That seems to fit. We'll see, I'm listening to the album right now.

Nothing compares to the feeling you get when you pop the cd in and Everything in its Right Place starts with that cascading keyboard. Its like hypno-therapy.

Billy Corgan caught a lot of guff for saying he wanted to get away from the traditional album format... although now he's working on a 44 song album whose songs will be released just a few at a time until the whole thing is culminated in a couple years with the release of the artwork and supplementary materials. You don't get the same goosebumps as getting a full album, but at least new stuff is coming out.

Thom gets a pass no matter what he says it seems.

this was the version at the SB show. I had never heard that other version until this last tour when you and i were texting back and forth.

I won't skip it this time, just for you.

But since you're already contemplating never speaking to me, I'm going to just say now that I enjoy John Mayer's cover of Kid A. I'm not saying I prefer it, but I do like it.

is it as awesome as James Blunt's cover of Where is My Mind?

Perhaps my favorite song on the album is How to Disappear Completely. That song has had a very profound effect on my life, especially when I want to be depressed. I'm not saying the song is depressing, but if you're already depressed, the song will help you stay there. I often find I like being depressed, or at least I don't like to be cheered up when I'm depressed. I like it to run its course.

respond to it as though it had just been brought to your attention that James Blunt covered Where is My Mind and you've just died inside a little.

Whew. Here is my response: I can't believe James Blunt would feel the need to cover a song that is so below him. Hahahahahaha, sorry, I almost typed it without laughing.

Even the cover art to Kid A seems to reflect this theme....the ice age predicted in Idioteque against the back drop of flaming red skies. Apocalyptic.

Most beautiful moment on Kid A......Motion Picture Soundtrack.

And within MPS, the best part of that song is after the first verse....dead silence, then the harp and full instrumentation comes in at the "stop sending letters" part. It is ethereal...almost like an angel ascending to heaven.
