I thought 3 was pretty good. Had some nice dramatic tension. 7.7 sounds about right to me.

One of the things that will hurt 7 over time is that it was so derivative of earlier episodes when it didn't need to be. How many of these big planet-sized weapons are they going to destroy using the same basic approach? And another father-son conflict? Kind of a shame they didn't think of something new. Once the thrill of having the series rebooted wears off, the lack of originality will become more of an issue.

          Episode 3: 7.7
          Episode 4: 8.7
          Episode 5: 8.4
          Episode 6: 8.4
          Episode 7: 8.6

Most major movie events like this enjoy a big ratings bump on release and then gradually degrade over time, so there is no way Episode 7 will stay at 8.6. For example, The Dark Knight Rises was in the mid-9 range (and top-ten all-time) when it first came out. Now it is 8.5 and #172. For Star Wars Episode 7, I am guessing somewhere in the 7.5-8.0 is where it will eventually land. Will be interesting to see.
          Empire is 8.8.

If 3 is 7.7, then 7 will settle in Return of the Jedi range. It's definitely a better movie by solid margin than 3. 3 to me is at best a 7.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

          • Disney had to get this right, so they went with a director who's shown a lot of aptitude with being derivative of the best director of them all -- Spielberg.

As for the future of the series, Abrams got the most important thing right, really good casting for good characters. On the second viewing, I thought Driver was great. But Daisy Ridley is really good for her role.

If you look back at the original, Harrison Ford was a bit of inspired casting. Alec Guiness was going to be good in almost anything. Then you had James Earl Jones voicework, which is quite memorable.

On the downside, I've never particularly cared for Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill is fairly average in the role.

Settle in at 8.4? When it is currently 8.6? Not a chance.

You think it's going to rated the same as 3? Not a chance. Everyone makes fun of that movie now.

To keep up, look at the definition of range.

No way episode 2 is worse than 1. It should be scraping the bottom of the ratings barrel.

Everyone? There are a half million ratings on IMDb.

To keep up, look up the definition of average/mean.

Nah-- it's generally agreed amongst us nerds that 2 is the worst. This is the low point of the series due to so much damn cgi you can almost see the tennis balls everyone is supposed to be talking to. This is the one w the whole ridiculous sequence of C 3PO in the droid factory getting worked over on the assembly line -- ALL cgi special. It also has the worst dialogue in the series-- "Sand gets everywhere," "Hold me like you used to back on the lake on Naboo," "m'lady" etc., along w Obi Wan's fake beard, whiny skinny anakin, and the horrible mistake (according to me) of Yoda wielding a light saber.

Episode I had a few things going for it: 1. A lot more practical effects and on-location sets 2. Darth Maul. 3. Qui Gonn 4. the Pod race

Episode II had a couple good things, but I mostly only like the fight between Obi Wan and Jango Fett and Anakin killing sand people.

Luckily Mark Hamill has probably blossomed the most as an actor since his turn in SW. I'm interested to see what he does as Luke in the next one.

For all Lucas' talk about how this one was a throwback he sure is the master of the throwback. In fact he is on record in various documentaries talking about how the three prequels should 'rhyme' with the original trilogy. The podrace itself was a throwback to a cut scene in IV where Luke races speeders on Tatooine through the canyon w his buddies and miraculously beats everyone.

I agree that they probably should have found a different device for Starkiller Base or whatever, but then I think it was just a touchstone and subplot that really didn't matter much, rather than a vital plot point. (I mean-- did anyone care that the 'new republic' was blown to smithereens? I guess it may be important later, but it was just a sidebar.) For example, they do blow up the oscillator and destabilize the planet, but the climax of the movie is Rey vs. Kylo Ren, and the denouement was Rey finding Luke. They did cram in a mess of SW touchstones(father/son conflict, resist the dark/light side, blowing up a shield first, death planet, short lived showdown between the villain and the 'mystic') but I can't help but feel they are just getting those feels out of the way in this movie, which was basically just a TON of exposition and not much plot-- much like the first one, to be honest. I rewatched Looper to get a feel for Rian Johnson's writing and I think it's just going to not be 'derivative' at all in the same ways outside of the familiar vehicles and planets. He also directed the Breaking Bad episodes 'Ozymandias' and the Fly episode, if that's any indication. Gonna be good and weird.
