    Actually, I didn't really enjoy Independence Day. I've enjoyed all the Star Wars movies, and even most of the Star Trek movies.

    • I think the polt issues that are being discussed with sich fervor here are related more to the business approach that Disney is taking. They wanted to re-assert and extend a franchise. They want to make a new star wars movie every 18-24 months, and have a new star wars land in theme parks, etc. So this movie had to do two things. First, it had to establish its bona fides with all the star wars nerds out there. They needed to assure them that the franchise as in good hands and that Disney could be trusted. Second, they had to make a film that kids coming of movie age in the last 10-15 years would like and support. To do so, they asked Abrams to make a new, fun movie, but they also relied a lot on prior plot lines, devices and characters. This made it clear it was still going to be Star Wars, pleasing the base, but also that it would go in a modern direction. I think they did a nice job.

      btw, I thought the Rey actress was great. Given the type of film, she and the storm trooper guy both did a great job, IMO.
      PLesa excuse the tpyos.

          I also agree with him that it was a very good popcorn movie.

          Funny you should mention Independence Day. I have been making the case that some movies enjoy an early surge in ratings, critical reviews, etc. but then fade over time. I found this fascinating website that tracks the IMDB ratings of the top 250 list (i.e., movies that are now or ever have been on the list) over time.

          http://top250.info/

          Independence Day started out at 7.7, but now sits at 6.9.

          Other notable movies (first/early ratings vs current rating):

          Star Wars Episode 1: 7.8 -> 6.5
          Star Wars Episode 2: 7.8 -> 6.7
          Star Wars Episode 3: 8.0 -> 7.7
          The Dark Knight: 9.5 -> 9.0
          The Avengers: 8.6 -> 8.1

          On the other hand, some movies get higher ratings over time:

          Shawshank Redemption: 8.4 -> 9.3
          The Big Lebowski: 7.2 -> 8.1
          Pulp Fiction: 7.8 -> 8.9

          • I liked it a lot. Didn't absolutely love it. We did watch episodes 4-6 before catching the late show on Xmas so I might have been Star Wars-ed out. I thought Rey was great as was her character.

            My roommate was in Independence Day as a pilot extra following the final scene. We went to see the movie with him and didn't believe him until one of the final scenes and there he was right behind Bill Pullman giving high fives in a compression suit. He drove a friend to try out for the movie and the casting director saw him in the lobby and said he looked like the perfect All-American guy and asked him if he wanted the gig. Made a couple grand for two days of work.

            I did not like the movie, btw (ID)

              • I enjoyed the film, it was a fun ride, blah blah blah...

                But the more I think of it, the more I'm disappointed in what could have been. I said a few days ago that I think Abrams did a MUCH better job with the Star Trek reboot than he did with Star Wars. It was just a tighter screenplay.

                One change could have made a huge difference for me:

                Spoiler for Plot detail:
                Wait to reveal Kylo Ren is Solo's son until their confrontation. There is no reason why the audience needed to know he was his son before the showdown, and it would have made for some good suspense.

                    That one was free Mac. I hope you got it out of your system. I am giving you a clean slate in 2016, I don't think that was the way you wanted to start it off.

                      I think in plotting a movie there are a lot of considerations when waiting until a moment like that for a big reveal. Sure it would have been a big reveal a la ESB, but that reveal might have added narrative layers to that scene and distracted the audience from what the director needed for the movie to keep pacing and tone on point. In fact, those same considerations were why more of the story wasn't laid out earlier in much of the deleted Snoke/Ren dialogue, which clarifies quite a bit.

                                I guess I consider a "plot hole" differently than an improbability. This is akin to anti-Mormon literature. Stop trying to destroy faith. I find your lack of faith disturbing.
