Those bold moves probably cost Disney hundreds of millions of dollars and forced Abrams into damage control in Episode 9, something he apparently couldn't pull off in the space of a two and a half hour film.

Disney is hoping Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni can right the ship. There's reason for optimism given how good The Mandalorian has been.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

    • I think the biggest reason that this movie won't live up to its financial potential is because it came out too late. Both my work and my wife's school planned to rent a theater for an employee Christmas showing, but since it came out so close to Christmas, lots of people are already on vacation. So my work did Jumanji last Friday and my wife's group went bowling.

Damage control? What damage? TLJ was pretty starkly the best SW movie to date and the biggest movie of 2017. They didn’t sound the alarms bc a bunch of nerds bitched about Luke being grouchy. And Rise of Skywalker picks right up where it left off and does its best to cap the saga. The one glaring flaw in this one is that for the first act the pacing is rushed, but not bc of anything Rian Johnson did... And JJ doesn’t exactly play it safe on this one, either. Some pretty fantastic creative choices were made that tie things up that I never would have thought of. I see its a mixed bag w critics, but anecdotally I don’t know any regular person so far who disliked it...

          • I'm headed to see Rise of Skywalker tonight - got free tickets from a vendor, but I'd pay for it if I didn't. (Who am I kidding - I'll probably pay to go see it again with at least one of my kids who wants to go.)

Count me among the huge Star Wars nerds who has enjoyed every one of the films - though I'll admit to loving some of them more than others - and who will continue to give my time and money to whatever trash they put out.

Just for perspective - my family is full of Marvel and DC nerds as well - so they get their share of our money. Looking forward to the new Wonder Woman movie coming out this spring.

Wasn't a fan of The Last Jedi and I think its disappointment is partly responsible for Solo doing so badly at the box office. People weren't skeptical of Star Wars movies until the Last Jedi.

Edit: I should clarify. People weren't skeptical of Disney's Star Wars productions, yet. People had obviously soured on George Lucas' Prequels.

Have fun- I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. I’ll probably see it again a time or two, depending what my break looks like.

Maybe. I’m in the camp that Solo was a fine addition but created most of its own problems eg bad publicity w the director shuffle/ not marketing it properly bc it came on the heels of the Last Jedi home release cycle. I rewatched the movies leading up to this one and the difference in quality bt the first 6 and the sequels is staggering. The original Trilogy’s strength is the chemistry between the actors and the music. Chemistry is hard to conjure, but you can control the quality of acting, music, dialogue, and direction, which the sequels have in spades. Rian Johnson made a work of art- revisit it and note all the takes on common themes that tie into the central narrative. TLJ could have been the final word in the SW universe without resolving the remaining conflicts and it would have been fair play. He never cheats the audience and that’s hard to do in a fantasy series like this where you need to send everyone home happy to get to the next blockbuster...

The bunch of nerds you're talking about are the core Star Wars audience, and most of them hated The Last Jedi. Merchandise sales are in the toilet and Solo lost money.

In deference to this new, more sensitive Commando, I will refrain from posting anything other than non-snarky and factual based comments in this thread, confident as I am that you will be just as sensitive and caring in threads that deal with subjects that matter to others. This is not snarky. I really will not be snarky here any more.

To prepare for the new SW film my family watched the Last Jedi yesterday. It was not the greatest film but I just can't see how anyone thinks it is as bad as the Phantom Menace, which is really one of the worst big budget films ever.
                            PLesa excuse the tpyos.

                            • The Audience is liking the film much more than the critics so far.

Not sure if this is first day viewers who are inclined to like it or more representative of the general public.

The bar for horrible Star Wars movies was set by Attack of the Clones. It's the worse Start Wars movie made, worse than Phantom Menace.
