My wife was incredibly uncomfortable during the prostitution scenes. The Master of the House scene just elicited some eye rolls.

Oh, and the movie is still awful.

I found it interesting how grotesque the prostitutes were. Not that I thought it was inappropriate but the prostitutes in the stage productions I've seen looked downright glamorous compared to those in the movie.

while I agree that better voices makes this a great (vs. good) movie, without Crowe, Jackman and Hathaway do you get the budget necessary to make exceptional costumes, cinematography, etc ?

I enjoyed the movie. Not nearly as much as I enjoyed seeing the original London cast in the Barbican Theatre in 1987, but that was a benchmark no one was going to top. I was most surprised by Anne Hathaway's performance and think she should be given consideration for Best Supporting Actress even though her screen time was relatively short. For the most part, the acting was able to offset the deficiencies in singing and the sets and costumes were excellent.

P.S. Amanda Seyfried should at least be given credit for hitting some very high notes.

Atlas Shrugs has a big following, and they were going to make it big budget with well known actors, but then they cut the budget and dropped the big name actors and nobody ended up caring.

I also think just as many or more people would be complaining if they dropped Crowe, Jackman, and Hathaway and got all trained Broadway singers. You'd hear "Film is different than Broadway. The singing was great, but these people obviously weren't that comfortable on film, and the acting was subpar. In a film, you need to emphasize the acting blah blah blah".

That's exactly what I would have said.

Everyone here seemed to love Marius, but I thought he was just ok because to me he gave the most stage performance. Lots of extended posturing and such. His solo was great (as he had one of the better voices) and I enjoyed that, but through other portions of the film I didn't think he wore the emotion the same way Jackman and Hathaway did.

My wife was digging him, though. She loves that dude in the J Crew catalog.

I don't think it's accurate though. This movie was a guaranteed hit regardless of whether it had Hollywood names.

Having been around the Moulin Rouge and Place de Pigalle in the dark hours of the night, I can attest that there is no such thing as a non-grotesque prostitute, at least not in that area. I'm sure in high end areas they exist.

That's my thinking as well. This thing has a huge built-in fanbase that would have turned out even with no-names. I'm sure the star power will probably boost the numbers somewhat, but I think it would have had good numbers regardless.
