Les Miserables - The Musical Movie

I saw this last weekend. Good movie, but not great.

Sorry, but a great musical has great singing, particularly from the leads. Russell Crowe, and to a lesser extent, Hugh Jackman, were just not up to the task. "Stars", my favorite number, was painful. Crowe has no depth or power in his voice, Jackman was better, but his voice sounded strained.

The ensemble numbers were great, and here's where the movie shined with the choreography and scenery you can't get on stage.

We bought it on Friday to make my parents watch. They had only seen it as a high school production. I enjoyed the movie in the theater quite a bit but absolutely loved it the second watch. I'm all in on this version now and downloaded the soundtrack today.

Look on the bright side: it will be another 10 to 15 years before Hollywood cranks out another musical.
