"My Octopus Teacher". We really enjoyed it. I think it would be a transcendent moment if a wild octopus were to recognize and interact with me over the course of a year. But hey, I'm a softie. I kind of got emotional watching the mother octopus tending her eggs at Monterey Bay Aquarium, finding out that she was going to die soon.

I watched this tonight. I was not familiar with the story before hand. Really enjoyed the movie (with the exception of Redmayne's terrible accent work). Some of the embellishments were over the top and clearly agenda-driven, but that's Sorkin for you. I enjoy most of what Sorkin does, but it always has to be taken with a few grains of salt. I actually think it detracts from the message a little as it is so obviously fictionalized at time. I would love to watch a documentary of what really happened.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View PostThe Trial of the Chicago 7 was released today and I had to watch it immediately, and not just because I'll be watching something else this evening. I remember the trial and surrounding events very well and the movie was immensely entertaining for me and the missus, who got a little choked up by the end. Great cast, including Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Joseph Gordon Leavitt, Sacha Baron Cohen, Frank Langella, Jeremy Strong (Succession), and Michael Keaton, in a very brief but excellent role. And an Aaron Sorkin script which, for better and worse, results in great dialogue too good at times to be true. The movie misses some key events, and invents others (including the rather maudlin finish), but I think it's true to the overall spirit of the time. Given the many parallels between 1968-9 and 2020, I think it's a must-see.Last edited by UVACoug; 10-23-2020, 09:52 PM.

I enjoyed The Queen’s Gambit miniseries, a fictional story based on the Walt Tevis novel about a female orphan chess prodigy. It’s also a great 50’s/60’s nostalgia trip, with a fine soundtrack. I have only a passing understanding of the game, yet the games were still very entertaining. But the movie is more about loss, pain, addiction, co-dependency, and redemption. I think it would have been better with five-six episodes rather than seven, but there's not much to complain about otherwise. I’d like to discuss the ending, but at the moment I’m the only one I know who’s seen it.

Ink Master is on Netflix and I am fascinated with this train wreck of a show.
It is the Top Chef formula for tattooing. Every episode follows the exact same formula. Flash challenge and then elimination challenge. The show will start with introducing the flash challenge. The contestants do the challenge. They then scream at each other back at the house they are living in. Next is in the elimination challenge. Every damn episode, it is people either complaining about how the challenge is not their style of tattooing or celebrating that it is their style.
The judging is almost always the same. The judges scream at the contestants about how to be Ink Master they need to know all the styles. Contestants go back to the house and scream at each other again until they get called in for the announcement of who is eliminated.
I also just cannot believe that people are volunteering to get these tattoos done. Also, often the tattoos are just terribly done. I'm disappointed that only 2 seasons of this show are currently on Netflix. As I lead this army, make room for mistakes and depression

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
