The notion that Thomas was born gay seems a bit modern to me, and more progressive than I'd expect from Robert. Of course, I have no idea what folks really thought about gays in the 1920s.

Also, it's interesting how easy it was to forgive Thomas, but how hard they've been on Ethel. I guess the biggest difference is that Ethel's indiscretions were known to all and had the potential to hurt their reputation. Perhaps if Thomas' indiscretions were had the same potential, they'd be less forgiving?

Also, Ms. O'Brien is vile.

Indeed she is! She even made Thomas look sympathetic! And he's pretty mean himself.

Maybe that is it. . it was all about reputation. I mean, if Thomas had been arrested, then that would have brought more scandal upon Downton than if they keep it quiet and forgave him. It's all about perception after all. :-)

Avoided the thread while I got caught up. My wife and I watched all three seasons in two weeks. I good litmus test of how good a show is, is the ability to watch it twice. Although I enjoyed it immensely, I don't think I could watch it again.

One thing I never thought possible, was their ability to turn Thomas around into a sympathic characture. I also grew very weary of the whole Bates thing. Could have done without the prison walkabouttheyard scenes.

My wife and I just started Season 1, but Mrs. GM and I almost shut it down when the two dudes kissed. I still haven't been able to watch 24 because of the lesbian kiss in the first episode. Other than the gay footman's libido, it's been an interesting series.
