When does the new iPad usually get announced? Is there going to be a new iPad? I haven't heard a lot of chatter about it.

Comes in March usually. Of course, maybe they'll just add an 8 MP camera on it and delay it to the Summer.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

BGR is reporting that the iPhone 4 will indeed go to $99 on contract. That is most likely for the 16GB version. 3GS drops to $FREE on contract. Sucks to be you, d-hole!

Good call(s), funk. Here's a comparison of the brand new iPhone 4S, compared to Android and Windows Phone (blech) offerings already on the market (viewed better at engadget - http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/i...ionic-and-tita)

Apple's stock dropped as much as 5% today (thought it closed at only -.52%) after the announcement of the "new" iPhone.

Serves them right. I can't believe they let the rumor mill run so long and so consistently on an iphone 5 theme when that was never the plan. Idiots.

OK, now I am back to square one on picking a new phone (my contract is up for renewal). I currently have an android (Spring HTC Hero) that is way beyond its useful life. Anticipating the release of the iPhone 5, I was all set to make the switch and give the iPhone a shot this time around. The attraction for me was a rock-solid OS. I like Android just fine, but about 8 months into my last contract, Sprint stopped providing OS updates for the Hero so the only way I could keep the thing functional was to root it and install a new custom ROM. It was kind of fun, but overall it was a major time drain and at times was a major PITA. The problem with Android is that you have one OS and a zillion different types of hardware with each phone having a different version of the OS and a unique set of issues. Not a problem with the iPhone.

On the other hand, the iPhone seems to be lagging significantly on the hardware side. But maybe the 4s is still plenty good for what I need.

This is going to be a tough decision.

Don't underestimate that custom A5 Arm processor. Apple, for example, has added some custom ISP co-processor stuff that is pretty amazing making the iPhone 4s rival a lot of the compact, standalone digital cameras. Also, the graphics core seemed pretty good as well given the demos they showed in the announcements. The claim is that it is 7x faster than any of the previous models. The 1GB of ram should make a significant differences as well. Apple seems to make a good trade off between speed and battery live. The 4s seems to have both great speed and battery life.

What may be really holding up the iPhone 5 (with 4G support) is most likely the infrastructure of the carriers. If Apple is really getting the network speeds they claim using 3G and their dual channel design then you may actually be better off with the iPhone 4s than an android phone with 4G.

                          Of course, I'm biased.

BTW, has sprint announced what their iPhone plans are going to be? If sprint gives iphone 4s customers their $80/mo unlimited everything plan I may drop my grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T and jump.

Yeah, I am not concerned about the processor. Moreso about screen size and a little about network speed.

I may buy a 4s to get me by for now and then when my son or daughter reaches the two-year point on the contract next year buy a 5 and then swap phones. If Daddy pays the bills, he can do that, right?

I haven't heard yet. I am sure they will stick with unlimited though.

I currently pay ~$175 per month for five phones with plenty of minutes and unlimited data. It is a great deal.
