I heard that during the unveil Steve Jobs was unable to get a signal on the AT&T network.
It was the wi-fi. It was due to the number of press doing live blogging and such from the event that it overloaded them. Not as bad as the broken Flash links from the iPad debut.

The best part was him saying "we need everyone to turn off their equipment and set it on the floor"
I read that when Jobs said they were having problems connecting to the network someone yelled "try Verizon." That's when Jobs announced that they were on wi-fi not 3G. The author of that article speculated that even Apple doesn't trust AT&T's 3G network.
June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. said it logged more than 600,000 early orders for the iPhone 4 yesterday, a record, imposing a strain on computer systems and prompting carrier AT&T Inc. to suspend sales of the device before its June 24 debut.
I'll probably just go buy one on the 24th. They're going to sell them at Walmart, Bestbuy, Radio Shack, and AT&T stores. From what I've heard, it'll probably be easier to do that than preorder.
