  • So I just spent an hour playing Super Ghouls and Ghosts on the Switch Online. I got the throwback SNES wireless control and it was a fun retro experience. It also didn't hurt that there is a 'rewind' feature to smooth over the endless missteps one will make during a game this hard. It strains credulity to think anybody ever beat this game just on three lives.

    • My 8 year old ended up beating Hollow Knight without any assistance. I'm impressed, it is a damn hard game.

      • Animal Crossing is now in full effect. I don't think I would have gotten this game if not for the pandemic, but I'm up to my neck in it now

I've been hearing people rave about this game since the original on Gamecube. Based on the hype alone I got it. It's kind of just a classic world builder, but with tasks and little ways to incrementally upgrade your house, island, museum, etc. It's very satisfying in a zen garden sort of way.

            • I just completed my first season in career mode. Season 1 is rough, since you are just refining your attributes and grinding to upgrade your character, but I narrowly made the playoffs w the Jazz and then steamrolled my way, sweeping the whole thing to the 2020 championship.

The strange thing about 2k is that there is a whole swirling ecosystem of free agents and trades happening around you that you have little control over. If you emerge as an influential player (i.e. good at basketball so the team wants to keep you around) you can identify players in the free agency market to target and some will end up on the team.

Season 1, my team was me, Mitchell, Gobert, Mudiay, Nemanja Bjelica(!), Niang, Conley, Bojan Bogdanovic, Joe Harris, and a few others I can't remember.

Season 2, We ended up with Jae Crowder, Jabari Parker, and Jonas Jerebko from free agency and as far as I can tell we only lost Joe Harris from the list above. That's an upgrade.

It was really weird playing the Nets in the finals and having to defend Joe Ingles and Jeff Green. WTF??

If your daughter ever wants to invite my son to her island or come to my son's island, he is always looking for people to play with. Same goes for Commando.

I also like the game. It is very soothing.

I've been playing 2K20, but I didn't go with the MyPlayer mode. I just went with the standard franchise mode. Am I missing out? I'm currently 14-4 with the Jazz team as presently constituted.

                    • So I tuned into the Facebook virtual studios presentation this morning... and ended up pre-ordering the new Oculus 2 that drops in October.

It actually looks pretty fantastic, retails for cheaper than the first iteration, and is a big step forward. I didn't think I'd be dropping cash this morning, though, since I'm planning on pre-ordering the new Xbox on Monday night. I had to pull the trigger, though, because that thing is 100% not going to be available for Christmas.

In fact, I'd recommend people logging on to oculus.com and getting your own before the pre-sale sells out.

                          • Star Wars Squadrons is a complete blast-- they have captured what I loved about Rogue Squadron on the Game Cube that was impossibly difficult but endlessly addictive-- a rare combo in gaming.

I don't get to play enough to make a run at multiplayer games and modes, but the single player campaign is awesome so far. I love how it alternates between Empire/New Republic point of view and forces you to take every kind of ship out for a spin. Targeting TIE bombers with an A Wing or X-wing never gets old.

                            • Anyone here have much experience in with any of these retro classic NES mini video game consoles? My wife wants one and their are a ton available but they mostly have terrible reviews. Some of them have 100s of the original games but they tend to be reviewed worse than ones with fewer up loaded games. Is there an actually reputable knock off console?

A couple years back, my dad got every kid one of those knockoff game systems. Sort of an homage to the fact that he used to stay up late playing those games with us. I think the one he got us was called a Cool Baby. Chinese garbage. The HDMI port broke within a week and he had another one shipped to us. That one still works. The biggest problem for me was that on games where it needs to save your progress (like Zelda) the save mechanism was super sketch. Not reliable at all. Also, the interface for selecting games was trash. You would basically have to scroll down through hundreds of games each time.

So memory and interface are the two things I would look at.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock
