Hey, Cary Grant never won one either.

I just watched the Werner Herzog Antarctica-set documentary Encounters at the Edge of the World. Great stuff and definitely enjoyable if you like other Herzog docs like Grizzly Man and Little Dieter Needs to Fly.
Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

      I'd give it an A-.

Sounds promising. What's it about? What did you like about it?

        • Finally saw Inglorious Basterds. I liked it.

          • "Afghan Star"

It's fascinating to find out how important pop culture really is. American art culture is so nuanced and layered, we dismiss and decry "mainstream" pop culture, but Afghanistan's version of "American Idol" carries a vast amount of importance and symbolism. There was a graphic early in the film that said "young people voting on 'Afghan Star' is their first exposure to democracy". That blows my mind.

            • Road To Roubaix - Certainly for the cycling aficionado, but well done. Some of the still shots are just mesmerizing and the doc as a whole does its job of an inside look at how difficult this one day race really is. 4 out of 5 stars.

              • Watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind last night. I haven't sat down and watched that movie from beginning to end in years. What a fantastic film.

I saw the Other Guys. It was OK but all the funniest stuff is in the trailer.

                    • Cop Out - I didn't pay attention to this film at all when it came out, so I was pleasantly surprised. The first 5 minute scene just slayed me. The movie as a whole isn't anything special, but Tracy Morgan makes me laugh.

The Joneses - I didn't even know this film existed. I thought the premise was pretty good, the story interesting, but then turns into a love story for Duchovny and Mrs Kutcher.

                        • I watched a few good ones over the past week.

OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies is a French spoof of the spy genre. It's filmed to look like a 60s James Bond flick and the hero is a super secret agent but they play up his horrible chauvinism and complete cultural obliviousness. When told by his contact in Cairo that Islam is a religion with millions of followers he starts laughing hysterically and condescendingly asks "Sweetheart, do you have any idea how big a million is?" It's a funny movie and I think they've already made a sequel.

We also watched Roger Dodger, which features a great performance by Campbell Scott as a know-it-all womanizing ad copywriter showing his teenage virgin nephew how to pick up women during a night on the town. Hilarious, scathing and pretty dark.

Last night I caught one of my all-time favorite movies, The Sweet Smell of Success on some new MGM HD channel. It looked fantastic, much better than my DVD, and I hope they finally get around to releasing this better transfer, maybe on Blu-ray. If you haven't seen it, it's one of the great noir films. Burt Lancaster as a powerful and ruthless gossip columnist in New York and Tony Curtis as a sleazy press agent trying to curry favor with him. Awesome, awesome movie.

                          • Lake Placid 2. An awesome, awesome SyFy channel original movie about overgrown crocodiles inhabiting a lake in Maine. The computer generated effects were so hilarious that my wife put down her book and enjoyed the show with me. Also, it was fun to see John Schneider play almost the exact same role he plays as Clark Kent's dad in Smallville. I have Lake Placid 3 recorded and ready to be watched on my DVR. I can't wait.

Gran Torino-Great way for Eastwood to end(?) his acting career.
                              W.-Nice performances, but the story/execution wasn't good.
Girl, Interrupted-Thought it was fine (and loved Elisabeth Moss, Brittany Murphy, Angelina Jolie, and Jeffrey Tambor), but it could've been a lot better.
