I wasn't too interested in this one but the Filmspotting guys have turned me around.

Over the weekend, SS and I watched Jean-Pierre Melville's Le Cercle Rouge. It was fantastic, one of the greatest heist films I've ever seen. The heist itself, which takes place in the middle of the night at a jeweler, is astonishing. It's about 30 minutes long and is done in almost complete silence.

Last night we watched Out of Sight, one of my favorites. Clooney and Lopez are on fire in that movie.

Oh also, last weekend I caught 1990's Internal Affairs on late-night cable. Sometimes there's nothing better than primo late 80s/early 90s sleazy cop melodrama. I've rarely wanted to punch a character in the face more than Richard Gere's corrupt cop and Nancy Travis's hair is so huge it deserves top billing.

Kids in general these days seem more socially retarded...

None of them date. They hang out. They text. They sit in the same car or room and don't say a word...they text. Then, they go home and whack off to internet porn.

I think that's the sad truth about why these kids are retards.

The scene between Travis and Garcia, where he accuses her of cheating on him: hottest ever.

That era did seem to have a talent for dark, hot sexual chemistry, didn't it? It helps to have actors as intense as Richard Gere and Andy Garcia.

          • "The Fall"

Visually stunning. One of the best-looking films I've ever seen. The plot is a little convoluted, but overall very unique and ambitious. It reminded me a lot of "Pan's Labyrinth", a movie I appreciate more every time I recall it.

                • I'm sure this will provoke some eye rolls, but I saw 17 Miracles last night. It's about the Willie and Martin handcart companies. Some of the writing, acting, and production isn't great, but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Heartbreaking and uplifting. There is an element of follow the brethren no matter what which can be a definite turnoff, but it's hard not to be inspired by the faith of the members of the Willie company. Something I could use more of.

I'm looking forward to seeing 17 Miracles but am troubled by the "follow the brethren no matter what" theme. I do really need to see this film. Had an unpleasent discussion/argument about the Willie and Martin handcart company saga with a fellow ward member who had seen the film and was regurgitating this theme. My observation is that those handcart companies should never have been sent - that following the brethren no matter what could get one killed - and that at a minimum church members need to receive personal revelation that such counsel as crossing the plains in early winter is the correct choice for their families. The guy I was having the discussion with was very orthodox and one of those with the view "when the brethern have spoken the thinking is done". And then mentioned that I was soiling the legacy of these pioneers by questioning whether they should have embarked on their journey to Zion. It turned ugly when I stated that one of my ancestors was the GA who sent the Willie and Martin Companies off and promised them protection and that I was also a direct decendent of a survivor of the Willie Handcart company. And my view was that the Lord can certainly intervene when a GA screws up. But there was a lot of suffering involved and many casualties - this narrative did not have a totally happy ending like the Stripling Warriors where everyone lives. The guy remarked that I probably lacked faith in trusting the brethern. I was about to object before realizing he was correct - at least on this point.

Sorry for the threadjack. I probably won't be able to see the film until its available on DVD. Hopefully, I'll be similarly inspired by the faith of those handcart pioneers as it appears I could use more of that as well.

Weird to see Fred McMurray in a serious role.

Great movie, especially when you have a budding film critic pointing out stylistic elements, narrative technique, etc.

We saw "The Debt" Friday. Entertaining, well-acted, kind of like a Cold War thriller (which is kind of was). If you don't like moral ambiguity, you won't like this movie. I liked it.

                            I want to see "Moneyball."
