Last night I caught Carlos over at Tower Theatre. It's a biographical pic about the famous terrorist/assassin/political activist from the 70s. Here's the thing: the movie was originally filmed as a TV miniseries so it was a whopping SIX HOURS LONG! Seriously. 6:30 to 12:30. It was fun, but I don't think my enjoyment of this one would have been lessened by waiting to watch it at home on DVD.

It was very international. A lot in English and French, but also Arabic and I think some Italian.

No, he's still alive, serving a life sentence in France. He's the Carlos the Jackal featured in the original series of Bourne novels (fictionalized obviously) and was the guy responsible for the OPEC raid and hostage situation in 1975. It's a pretty fascinating story and paints a very interesting picture of the international terrorism/activism movement going on at the time.

Since becoming empty nesters in September, Mrs. PAC and I have hit the local cineplex every Tuesday night. We nearly always have the theater to ourselves. We've seen a few turkeys but a lot of good ones. This week's offering was Inside Job, a documentary about the financial meltdown of 2008. It went a bit too far, I thought, in its criticisms of Bernanke, and even Greenspan, although the latter deserves blame certainly, and is savage in its critique of investment banking. Overall, worth seeing.

P.S. The previous week's movie was Burlesque, which I shall not review here.

Popcorn is only a buck, but we go then mainly because it's probably the least crowded night of week. For some movies, I actually prefer a large crowd, but most of the time, it's nice to sit alone with Mrs. PAC in the center of the theater with few, if any, other attendees. It's like a private screening, which is my due.

I saw "Babies" the other night. I don't know if anyone has talked about it here. Basically, it is a documentary (without commentary) of babies in Namibia, Mongolia, Tokyo, and San Francisco from birth to first steps. It was mildly entertaining for those of you who have had young children.

I will say this--The film is rated PG for "maternal nudity". In other words, there are lots of bare boobs, but not the attractive kind.

Macy was great. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as UITA, but it was another fine piece of work by Reitman, no doubt about it.

The wife and I just got back from THE SQUARE, an Australian film noir that was pretty fantastic. Shades of the Coens BLOOD SIMPLE and Sam Raimi's A SIMPLE PLAN. You know any movie where somebody finds a bag of money and decides to keep it always results in more problems than the bag is probably worth. Highly recommended.
