I can understand those who were not bowled over by Hamilton. I’m not a big fan of hip hop (no surprise), yet I loved Hamilton. Chernow’s book, on which the musical is based, is one of the best biographies I’ve ever read, a prodigious work befitting its subject, and the musical is a superb 150-minute summary.

Most musicals are trivial bits of entertaining fluff--Hamilton is amazingly dense with historical data, while not seeming didactic. The range from the hilarious (King George III—awesome) to the tragic (e.g., Eliza’s and Angelica’s numbers) is impressive. Jefferson’s “What’d I Miss?”, which opens the second act and cleverly deviates, both in tone and musical form, from the story’s arc, is a great combination of humor and truth (he was more than a little out of step having spent so much time away in France), and sets up perfectly the coming clash with Hamilton.

The production is especially meaningful, even therapeutic, in view of the current national conflict between those with fierce national pride and those who rip on our checkered past and flawed founders. By the time Hamilton finishes, one has a strong sense of both a man and a nation, with serious shortcomings and yet unparalleled greatness.

I liked what one historian said when asked why there is no national monument for Hamilton. He responded with something like, “Look around. Our nation is a monument to Alexander Hamilton.” The musical does him justice.

You said in one sentence what I attempted to say in four paragraphs--but then you're an engineer, and I get paid by the hour for writing stuff.

I feel like I was supposed to like it, but I couldn't get past the hip-hop. I lasted about half an hour and then went into the other room and did nothing in particular.

Hamilton was amazing. We watched it Friday night as a family. Since I have caught my 8 year old and 5 year old watching it again. I had never seen the play but have listened to the soundtrack countless times over the last 4 years. Seeing the play and the closeups really magnified the brilliance of that original cast. I am not even ashamed to admit that I cried a couple times. The first during Goldsberry's performance of Satisfied. I don't even know when or where she breathed during that number. And the fact she did it in a corset is doubly impressive. Miranda is a genius. The music, the lyrics, the production, all are incredible. PAC said it best about the source. Chernow's Hamilton is the best biography I have ever read. For Miranda to take that and turn it into a stage production with meaning and relevance to our time is a feat that deserves Lebowski's summary praise: It is one of the great works of art of our time.

So it looks like I need to go read the Chernow book, get more familiar with the music and watch it again, maybe see it in person. I admit, I have had the King George tune in head since watching it. It has a Daydream Believer vibe to it.

On a different note, being at my in-laws who have dish, I was able to catch the first 2 episodes of The Last Dance. My daughter who isn't into watching sports really liked it.

I was just thinking about this movie the other day. My wife was watching some cheesy made-for-TV movie with Dabney Coleman and expressed it was weird seeing him in a different role than the misogynist boss from 9 to 5. The first movie I remember seeing with Dabney was Cloak and Dagger. It's been a while, so I'll have to track it down and have the kids watch it sometime.

Hollywood doesn't have much for the Dabney Colemans of the world. I always like him in Wargames.

The Goonies is an all-time classic. Love that one.

As I'm looking through my DVDs, 1984 was a strong year for Hollywood:

                            Footloose
                            The Karate Kid
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
                            Red Dawn
                            A Nightmare on Elm Street
                            Conan the Destroyer
                            Dreamscape
                            Star Trek III
                            The Terminator
                            Beverly Hills Cop
                            Ghostbusters
                            Gremlins
                            Sixteen Candles
                            Splash!

When the quarantine went into effect here we started having family movie nights where we made popcorn and introduced some childhood favorites to our girls. It's fun to see how some movies have held up and others haven't. Also, ratings from the 80s are far different than today's.
