Went and watched Peter Jackson's "They Shall Not Grow Old". Fantastic. Fascinating. Sobering.

I highly recommend that you google showing times around your area. Go and spend the 90 minutes. Then spend the 30 minutes after the movie to watch how they did it. Equally as fascinating.

Steered to this thread (rather than the trailers thread) by the Tick, I'll chime in my agreement with him, hostile and Eddie on this one. It's a very fine and important movie, having seen it just last week as well--it's a shame the producers lack the confidence to put it into wide release. Awe were both very surprised that, despite the almost unbelievable horrors of life in the trenches, several of the interviewees said the experience was the best time of their lives (perhaps that's more of a reflection of a dismal post-war existence). Also, it was evident that the cliche of bad British dental hygiene was fully deserved.

Anyone interested in WWI and/or good documentary movie-making should be on the lookout for the next national showing.

I'm trying to go back and watch some past Oscar winners and other critically acclaimed stuff that I haven't seen before. This past weekend I watched Raging Bull for the first time.. It did not hold up well, IMO. Of course there was no way it could live up to the hype, but I was expecting at least something that I would say "I'm glad I watched that." I was wrong.

This is one I'm really interested in. The more I read about WW I the more amazed I am that the only real breakdown in discipline of the forces on the Western Front didn't happen until 1917. (The Russians are another story). Even the German Army in 1918 didn't mutiny - many of them quit during the fall offensive, but those that didn't returned to Germany as units and as an Army. If you want to read about the soldiers eye view of WW I in the trenches, I highly recommend Lyn MacDonald's books.

In that same vein I try and catch the best picture nominees each year. I saw Roma was on Netflix. I like Cuarón. But I made it through about 45-60 minutes before I gave up. I was bored out of my mind.

Ha, I've been waiting for someone to chime in on this, as I felt the same way but wondered if it was "just me," given the universal acclaim and front-runner status the movie seems to be getting. Initially, I stopped watching a third of the way in (shortly after the boyfriend was doing his martial arts thing in the buff with his junk flapping around--sorry for the spoiler everyone). But after the nominations were announced, I finished watching, more out of a sense of duty than enjoyment. As with all things Cuaron, it's beautifully staged and filmed, but sooooo humdrum. But I admit I gained a deeper appreciation for the lead's performance when I read that this was her first acting job ever, that they did the hospital scene in one take without her having been given a script and not knowing what was going to happen, and that the beach scene was done without her being able to swim, even though she told Cuaron she could. So, hat's off to her, but overall, kind of a snooze. I invite the other film buffs here to set me straight.

I watched like 15 minutes of Roma and quit but I was really tired — might try again when I’m better rested and see if I have better luck making it farther.

I have yet to watch Roma but all my co-workers were raving about it. Of course they are all social workers so I planned to watch it myself but now I think I’ll pass..
