Actually, while I was confounded about every second I was sitting there watching it in the theatre, it's made me think about it a bit and unravel its meaning. Basically, while some people want to say it's about global warming or whatever, my take is that it's a really bleak new version of the temple video- or the meaning of life for non-LDS. I'd be willing to discuss more if anybody else watches this.

I had no intention of watching mother! when I thought it was artsy fartsy flotsam by Aronovsky, but then I watched this interpretation on youtube:

and now I am keen to watch it and to interpret it from and LDS context.

First they killed my Father

Angelina Jolie, with Maddox Jolie-Pitt, her sixteen adopted from Cambodia son as "executive producer", directed or funded this film about the days of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia as told through the eyes of Loung Ung, who was five at the time. It doesn't rush, doesn't focus upon sentimentality yet holds you. It is on Netflix, but worth the two hours and six minutes. Without spoiling the ending, it involves the exit of the US and the future Vietnamese-Cambodian conflict. The movie is subtitled and in Khmer, the language of Cambodia, and parts of Vietnam and Thailand.

The key to this movie is the seemingly impassive eyes of the young actress, who is acting for the first time, as she witnesses the horrors of losing her family and of Communist indoctrination. You will hear Angkar throughout the movie which the Khmer term for "Communist Party."

It is a different experience because it's not from the American experience as "The Killing Fields," from 1984. Interestingly, the author is now a restaurateur in Cleveland, Ohio. And a sad note, Cambodia is now led by a former Khmer Rouge, Hun Sen, who is consolidating power as a ruthless dictator.

Mother. Either I'm not smart enough to pick up on the symbolism or they did a very poor job marketing the movie. I wish I would have watched the youtube video KL linked above before watching. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more. This is an example of a movie you need to understand a little about it before going in. Why not start the film with an intro like in Star Wars font: this movie is an extended metaphor with Javier Bardem representing Father God and Jennifer Lawrence representing Mother Earth. It takes away from the art a little, I guess. But would turn a frustrating experience into an enjoyable experience for millions of watchers.

You actually gave a summary that suggests this movie could be enjoyed. I read several reviews that declares this movie to be the worst of all possible films.

Dunkirk. We arrived at the theater a little late, so we missed the first few minutes. Wish we could have caught that. I was expecting the dialogue to be more difficult to understand.

Blade Runner 2049. Compares favorably to the original but not as good, IMO. The imagery and cinematography are similar to the original and improved. Likewise the soundtrack has a similar theme but lacks the depth of Vangelis from the original (I enjoy listening to the original Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis, one of my favorite movie soundtracks). The story is original and well done and touches on a similar theme as the original - what does it mean to be human? The cast/acting is also well done, Ryan Gosling is surprisingly good. Overall, I give it a thumbs up and my recommendation. However, I don't think Blade Runner 2049 will crack my all-time Top Ten list like the original. I continue to watch the original several times a year and look forward to watching them both back-to-back in the future as 2049 is a very good compliment to the original Blade Runner.

When I was about eight I went to a Saturday matinee of "Gone with the Wind". The movie seemed to last forever and I thought it would never end. Tonight "Blade Runner" felt the same way to me. The actors seemed to be dragging out their lines, the movie would stay on a scene that they could have covered in half the time, I kept checking the time to see how much more I would need to suffer through. It was brutal.
