Watched the John Carney "trilogy" over the weekend: Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. I think you would like them. Had to rent Once (via FandangoNow), but the latter two are available on Netflix.

I have seen two fo them and I did like them. Thanks for the suggestions. Nice to know we have each other's back in this gnarly and dangerous thread.

The Lobster. Hated it. I don't mind being disturbed, if I'm being challenged or there is a point to it somehow. I didn't get it.

20th Century Women - Set in 1979 Santa Barbara, Annette Bening plays a single mother raising her teenage son in a rambling, somewhat crumbling old house. She enlists the help of her renters (Greta Gerwig as a punk photographer diagnosed with cancer and Billy Crudup as a meditative handyman) plus that of her son's troubled friend (Elle Fanning) in raising her son to be a good man, to mixed results. It's kind of a meandering film but I really enjoyed it. Everyone in it is very good, including the son. Never seen him in anything but he was excellent for his (seeming?) age. But the movie really belongs to Bening, who gives a great performance.

Eat Drink Man Woman - 1994 Ang Lee movie about relationships between and among a prominent, aging and widower chef and his three daughters in Taipei. One is a Christian teacher, one a career woman, and the youngest a fast food worker. Not an amazing movie but a good one.

The Young Offenders - Recent Irish movie about a pair of idiot teenagers who bike to the coast in the hopes of recovering and enriching themselves from some bales of cocaine thrown off a smuggling ship as the coast guard closed in. They are pursued by a local cop obsessed with catching them for bike theft. Not great, but on the whole it was fun. The two leads have a good rapport. Some gorgeous shots of the Irish countryside. Don't think I recognized a single actor, but if the leads and director teamed up again, I would watch. This one is on Netflix.

Fences - Way too long and the dialogue was tedious. I snoozed a bit but didn't fall fully asleep. Definitely shouldn't have been made into a movie as I'm sure it works fine as a play. Denzel was great, as should be expected, and all other performances were great, but the movie was missing a lot, like a climax and decent resolution.

Moonlight - This thing won best picture? I guess I can see that with it being one year removed from the great white out at the Oscars. I guess anything set in a mostly black backdrop would have won, and it's icing on the cake that the protagonist was both black and gay. Don't get me wrong, the movie was well done and enjoyable, but it wasn't best picture material. The ending, meaning the last shot, was about as cheesy as a Lifetime movie, which is a shame because there was some good sexual tension built up there only to be absolutely misplayed.

Get Out. I dislike horror movies mostly, and haven't seen one in years, so I went to this with low expectations that were exceeded, by a lot. More than just a horror movie, it has some interesting takes on race relations with some funny caricatures of white liberals attitudes towards blacks. "I would have voted for Obama a third time if he could have run," the dad (Bradley Whitford) assures his daughter's black boyfriend, who plays the protagonist perfectly. "I've met Tiger Woods," assures a family friend, "He's the best!"

I won't divulge any of the plot or the conclusion (which isn't quite as good as the movie overall), as it's fun to experience the movie without any preconceptions (I hadn't read any reviews or spoken with anyone else about it, but I'd love to do so now). Rated R for violence and language, but I've certainly seen and heard worse. The horror is mainly in the growing sense of trouble, which is as it should be. Currently at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes--a surprisingly entertaining time at the movies.

P.S. There's a TSA security guard who's hilarious throughout the movie. I have newfound respect for these dedicated public servants.

P.P.S. The movie was written and directed by Jordan Peele (of Kay & Peele). This was apparently his first attempt at both, but you wouldn't know it; the guy has some serious skills. Oh, and don't even watch the trailer if you haven't seen it yet. I'd seen it earlier this month and it's a poor set-up for the full experience.

This is great I finally got around to seeing it with my 16-year old son and he agreed it's pretty awesome -- love a smart "horror" movie. The TSA agent friend is awesome!

Win It All - Netflix original about a gambling addict (Jake Johnson, a bit more restrained that usual but still schlubby) who finds himself deep in the hole just as he's trying to develop a relationship with a new girlfriend and start a normal job working at his brother's landscaping business. Johnson is good and Jo Lo Truglio is good as his older brother. First thing I've seen him in where he's not playing a cartoonish character. Also liked Keegan-Michael Key as Johnson's sometime sponsor. Not a great movie but a pleasant enough one. Very indie-ish. Not really a comedy though it can be funny.

Hacksaw Ridge - Finally got around to this one. On the whole I thought it was very good. There were a few scenes and lines that felt awkward, like they could have used a couple more run-throughs, and the soundtrack was a bit much at times, but has a great story and good actors.

The Founder - I liked it. I love movies about business and they did a good job with it. I took a financial statement analysis class at BYU and McDonald's was one of the companies we analyzed and it's interesting how the analysis in that class matched what Ray Kroc setup...meaning McDo makes their money mostly off of real estate than anything else.

The Big Lebowski - Watched it again as it was on HBO while I was flipping channels and Shark Tank was a rerun and the Cavs were blowing out the Pacers. It's much better the second time...even funny. Maude might be my favorite character in the whole thing. The scene where they scatter the ashes bugs me because the wind is blowing out to sea the whole time WS gives his speech, then they cut to a new shot and the wind is blowing like crazy in teh other direction.

Suicide Squad - I turned it off 2/3 of the way through as the sandman was calling. It's not as bad as Batman v Superman, but pretty close. As far as superhero movies go, it's bad and overly cliched, which is saying something since bad and cliched is pretty much the superhero movie plot. Margot Robbie is hot, but not really in this movie and she sucks at giving one-liners and being the comic relief. She should stick to discussing CDOs while naked in a bathtub

Finally got around to seeing Fences.
