I watched Pacific Rim last night. Guillermo del Toro did manage to not make it look like Power Rangers...barely. I had a hard time suspending disbelief at points in the movie, like between the opening and closing credits. Lots of action though.Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

Finally got around to seeing the new Star Trek movie. I enjoyed it quite a bit - particularly all of the references to prior TV episodes and movies: (Khan...Dr. Marcus...The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one...Someone has to enter the compartment filled with radiation...and then is miraculously brought back to life...tribbles...fun stuff.)
The movie's been out long enough I don't know if the above requires spoiler tags - but I don't see the spoiler button any more and am just too unsophisticated to know how to do it without a button...

Another thumbs up for "The Way, Way Back". Highly recommend. Very well written and acted. It was a film I could personally relate to: about a teenager thrown into a new environment trying to find acceptance, friendship, and his place in the world. Went through a similar experience when my family relocated. Instead of finding a waterpark, I stumbled onto "The Sandlot".Originally posted by LA Ute View PostJust saw "The Way, Way Back." Best movie I've seen in a long time. Great story, affecting characters, terrific acting. Written by the same guys who shared an Oscar with Alexander Payne for the screen adaptation of "The Descendants."
It opened in L.A. tonight in only 2 theaters. It will get a wide release soon.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

I finally saw 3:10 to Yuma over the weekend. Although I wasn't really paying attention when I set the DVR and turns out that I recorded the 1957 version. I just watched the trailer for the 2007 movie and it seems almost ridiculous in comparison. The original is so uncomplicated and explosion free. The acting wasn't fantastic, but I still found the whole thing pretty engaging. Is the '07 version worth digging up?I told him he was a goddamn Nazi Stormtrooper.

In contrast I enjoyed the original True Grit over the 2010 remake.

I liked the 3:10 to Yuma remake better then the original. Likewise, I enjoyed the Coen brothers True Grit remake more then the original. None are bad movies. I guess I have a perference for modern/remade Westerns. For instance, I like Unforgiven more than Eastwood's earlier Westerns.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostI enjoyed it very much and would take the time.

I really couldn't tell the difference in the two and since I felt the Coens didn't really add anything of substance, I give the Edge to John Wayne.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI liked the 3:10 to Yuma remake better then the original. Fair enough, you do raise a good point about the similarities between the films. Both Rooster Cogburn performances were nominated for Oscars although the Duke won the Oscar for his performance while the Dude did not. I enjoyed the performance of Mattie Ross (Haliee Steinfled) in the remake more than the original (Kim Darby). I also give the Coen brothers points for filming in locations more congruent to the novel than the original. But they are very similar movies.
That brings up an interesting point. Both True Grit movies were well received. However, I recently saw a remake of The Flight of the Phoenix. IMO, not as good as the original. But the main complaint from critics was that it was too much like the original only with a different setting (Mongolia vs North Africa). I guess if one make a good enough film with a remake, as is the case with True Grit, film critics can get past that fact that it isn't significanlty different from the original.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

I would rather watch Russell Crowe in that movie than Les Misérable any day of the week.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostI wish they would done a sequel or two to that. I liked it too."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

I remember watching it once, and from what I recall, the beginning and end were good, but the middle seemed to drag on. Maybe I need to watch it again.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostMaster and Commander: The Far Side of the World. I watched it on TV again last night. I like that movie. Not that, sickos.
