Saw Before Midnight a couple days ago. Its the best of the trilogy, in my opinion. If you liked Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, you definitely need to see Before Midnight (but I'm sure you already knew that).

I couldn't decide whether Sunrise or Sunset made me want to gouge my eyes out more. To steal a line from you, I can't think of two movies I found more boring and vapid. Though I'll probably watch the third still, just to finish it. lol.

LOL ... that's funny. You might not like Midnight, but I think ... given your reaction to the first two ... that you'll only want to put acid in your eyes this time rather than completely gouge them out.

Man of Steel. Really disliked it. Almost hated it. Too much crashing around and destruction. After a while, all that destruction just palls. How many more buildings were going to collapse? And if that world machine really did the damage that the movie shows, earth is pretty much kaput.

I was really offended when they took the Man of Steel and transformed him from a Moses figure, savior of the Jews, to a Christ figure, savior of the entire earth. So Christ is the one, not Mohammed nor the Jewish Savior or anyone from all of the other religions? That's sort of presumptuous in a Hollywood movie. Now if it were playing at the Joseph Smith Building, that's another matter.

I did like it when Superman hits the sound barrier. I also liked what the "S" meant.

I'm not into comics, but I really liked Smallville when it aired so I'm more familiar with Superman than any other comic book figure. It's seems to me every iteration of the story has placed heavy emphasis on portraying him as the Christ figure. The parallels between Superman's life and the life of Christ have been conveyed in various tellings in the following ways: God come to earth to be raised by human parents; Martha's original name was Mary, Jonathan's middle name is Joseph; son God communicating with father God; disappearing into solitude -- desert vs. Fortress of Solitude -- before beginning his mission; not beginning said mission until age 30; mission to save earth; being resurrected and leaving a tomb after death; etc.

I haven't seen the new one (not terribly interested), but I saw in the trailer where Superman speaks to Jor-El in space, and is instructed to "save all of them" or something like that. He then fades into the distance in a crucifix-like pose. Maybe the Christ stuff is even more heavy-handed here, but for the most part I think it's always been there. In the pilot to Smallville Clark gets physically nailed to a cross.

Serious level of WTF-ness to this one. Obvious comparison is Malick, with the detailed shots of nature and sparse and hushed dialogue. But I swear the narrative in this thing was even more abstract than even Malick at his most opaque. I intend to watch it a second time, though I'm not sure I'd understand it any better on a subsequent viewing.

Negative Nancy, it was good. Pretty solid and unsettling. I saw it on Amazon. It was in my netflix cue but then went away when they purged a bunch of movies.

YES. I was thinking at about minute 36 of the relentless swishing, crashing, sweeping panorama shots that they must have been trying to one up the Avengers action sequence, which was in every way superior. This was like action porn. OOH LOUDER, OOH BIGGER EXPLOSION, NO BIGGGERRRR!! Also, I really hate Superman fight scenes for this one reason: NOBODY GETS HURT. Let me fly someone's face through a gauntlet of skyscrapers only to have them turn around, swing me around, and throw me through a distant patch of industrial smokestacks.... and not one of us is fazed.

I really liked the Russell Crow sequences and the villain and the Costner sequences, and I wasn't offended by the Christ parallels or the war in Heaven parallels or the pre-existence parallels or the Satan released on Earth for a short season parallels or whatever, but I could have done with a more subtle and tasteful take on the action sequences. I think we are aligned on movies for the most part though.

I thought it sucked, holy cow what a borefest.

Is it a generational thing? Does being born in the 80's affect my ability to connect?
