The language is a challenge...very slang Carioca but a great movie

The Descendants. Really good, with very strong performances from at least a half dozen actors. My bromance with George Clooney continues. Director Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, etc.) always does a great job showing the extraordinary aspects of ordinary lives, and rarely if ever do his characters in this movie produce a false note. The family isn't Ensign cover material, but one still feels drawn to them and appreciates their pain, empathy and unity.

Lots of laughs, but I was actually moved to tears 2-3 times, as any spouse or parent will be.

I especially liked the conclusion.

Spoiler for As the credits roll...:

Clooney's character and his two daughters sit down, under a shared comforter, eating ice cream as they're watching March of the Penguins (one never sees the screen, but hears Morgan Freeman's soothing narration). It's a great choice, given that a storyline of that movie shows how the female goes off, leaving the father to protect their offspring under very harsh conditions.

Also, if you like the Islands, you'll see dozens of great shots on Oahu and Kauai, accompanied by a fine soundtrack. An important scene takes place in a favored eatery near Hanalei (Tahiti Nui). I'd also like someone (KL, perhaps?) to tell me where the family estate (supposedly 25,000 acres on Kauai) was shot.

I'm hoping to see this on Saturday. Got the Muppets tonight and probably Hugo on Friday.

I watched Red during the wee hours of the morning. It seemed to be like pretty much most Bruce Willis movies - lots of gun play and one-liners here and there. A fun movie.

Also, I'm convinced that my FIL is a wuss. In the past two weeks he has seen Footloose and Twilight.

The Muppets

Really enjoyed it. Segel just always kills me. And lots of cameos from a bunch of actors, as expected, but funny to see Feist and Dave Grohl turn up in some of the music numbers. There was also a whistling portion that was written and performed by Andrew Bird.

Took the fam to Arthur Christmas. It took me a minute to realize Arthur wasn't the guy with glasses from PBS. I thought it was really fun.

Tron: Legacy. I was told by several friends that it was a waste of time, but I liked it. The special effects were great - even better than the first Tron movie, though I can't be sure, as it's been almost 30 years since I saw it.

I saw Tron in the theaters when it was released, but I think I need to see it again to find out if Legacy is actually a sequel.

Like Crazy, the indie film out of Sundance. It was okay. My complaint is that they painted it as this really beautiful romance, when it was clear that he wasn't really invested unless it was about protecting his territory (jealousy when she would interact with other men). The acting was pretty brilliant, however, and the lack of romantic cliche was refreshing, if a little startling.

Maybe it's amplified or tinkered with or something, but it's definitely Bird. As soon as Walter started, my wife leaned over to me and said "this is Andrew Bird." So we watched the credits and it said The Whistling Caruso, which is what Walter performed at the end, was written and performed by Bird.
