  • Puss In Boots. I had zero desire to go, I was pleasantly surprised.

    • "Riding in Cars with Boys." A Netflix download on a night when we couldn't seem to decide what we wanted to watch. We decided to give it a shot and found ourselves drawn into the story. We didn't love it but we liked it.

      • Beauty School of Kabul

It was sad when one of the women was explaining why she felt compelled to obey her husband (when he told her not to pursue her hairdressing business even though he has no job and makes no money): because women who dont obey their husbands are whores.

        • My sister-in-law suggested I watch "The Human Centipede." I did and am now wondering if anyone else saw it. The sequel is coming out soon.

I heard about it and watched the trailer, but something about a story line where a surgeon holds people hostage and surgically joins them from anus to mouth was not very compelling.

Jeez, is she your brother's wife or your wife's sister?

Was she joking when she suggested it?

              • Took the puffy check to see puss in boots. It was a fun show.

I noticed two distinct things about the previews in children's movies:

                1. There are a lot of children's movies that i have zero desire to see
                2. The music in these movies is getting decidedly better. There were previews for the Lorax (looks good), some X-mas movie (looks ok), a muppets movie (pass), another chipmunks movie (flee in terror)....but I heard songs from Lady Gaga, James, Vampire Weekend, and even The Polyphonic Spree. Goes to show that little kids don't have to listen to crappy music in the car. They will respond to contemporary music as much as they will respond to Disney tunes or row row row your boat.
                Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

                • Here Comes the Navy (1934) starring James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and Gloria Stuart (and the USS Arizona).

A cocky guy (Cagney) joins the Navy for the wrong reason but finds romance and twice is cited for heroism. Some scenes were filmed aboard the battleship USS Arizona.

The Robe (1953) starring Richard Burton, Jean Simmons and Victor Mature.

Marcellus (Burton) is a Roman tribune in the time of Christ. He is in charge of the group that is assigned to crucify Jesus. Drunk, he wins Jesus' homespun robe after the crucifixion. He is tormented by nightmares and delusions after the event.

Starman (1984) starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen

An alien takes the form of a young widow's husband and asks her to drive him from Wisconsin to Arizona. The government tries to stop them.
Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."
Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."
Col. Klink: "I didn't mean you sir, you're not clever."

                  • Ides of March. Though it played out in a very formulaic fashion, I thought it was worth watching. I thought they missed the mark a little bit in the timing of the release.

This movie should have been put out next September, it probably would have done much better.

                    • Margin Call - Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Stanley Tucci, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, and Demi Moore.

Great cast, and I thought a well done suspense drama loosely based on the final days of Lehman Bros. I was engrossed in the film and highly entertained for the 2 hours. I thought the ending was a little lackluster, but still okay. If you get a chance, catch it.

This is basically exactly what I would have written about this movie. There was one part that made me chuckle when the young upstart is working late into the night and finds a problem to report to his boss, Spacey comes in and is shown a computer monitor with graphs and charts on it to which he says "You know I can't read these things".

                        • The Descendants. Really good, with very strong performances from at least a half dozen actors. My bromance with George Clooney continues. Director Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, etc.) always does a great job showing the extraordinary aspects of ordinary lives, and rarely if ever do his characters in this movie produce a false note. The family isn't Ensign cover material, but one still feels drawn to them and appreciates their pain, empathy and unity.

Lots of laughs, but I was actually moved to tears 2-3 times, as any spouse or parent will be.

                          I especially liked the conclusion.
Spoiler for As the credits roll...:
Clooney's character and his two daughters sit down, under a shared comforter, eating ice cream as they're watching March of the Penguins (one never sees the screen, but hears Morgan Freeman's soothing narration). It's a great choice, given that a storyline of that movie shows how the female goes off, leaving the father to protect their offspring under very harsh conditions.

Also, if you like the Islands, you'll see dozens of great shots on Oahu and Kauai, accompanied by a fine soundtrack. An important scene takes place in a favored eatery near Hanalei (Tahiti Nui). I'd also like someone (KL, perhaps?) to tell me where the family estate (supposedly 25,000 acres on Kauai) was shot.
