  • Birdman

I'm not familiar with the director's previous films like MG is. But I did enjoy Birdman. Acting was excellent. Cinematography was a pleasure to watch. Some unbroken scenes lasted minutes (though I suspect some of the really long ones were digitally enhanced). I liked that the whole movie had a theater flair to it, dialogue and all, since it essentially all took place in a theater. Mrs. NWC found it very poignant, and saw a lot of parallels to life. I'm not sure if I thought it was all that, but I'd still recommend it. Solid B+.

    • Saw Interstellar with two of my boys. I was noting how it was very good but probably too long and my son replied, "Dad, time only moves at 1/2 speed in a Christopher Nolan movie."

      Interstellar
      Memento
      Inception

The guy is clearly obsessed with the concept of time.

A film about a driven kid who wants to be the next buddy rich (jazz drummer). It explores the line between genius and madness, teaching pressure and sadism. It has a 97% rating on rotten tomatoes. After seeing it I really want to find out who the bozos are who make up the 3%.

In case I wasn't clear, I strongly recommend this film, especially to musicians or anyone who has been obsessed with seeking perfection in any endeavor. It captures the moments, the feeling of being in the zone, of supreme confidence juxtaposed against the crushing insecurity of genius. It was very well done.
I saw this a couple weekends ago and loved it. Seems to get a lot of comparisons to abusive instructor-instructee (Full Metal Jacket) or pursuit of perfection (Black Swan) movies, but in a way it also reminded me of 8 Mile.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Watched yesterday and also felled asleep. I thought the first two were pretty good, but this one was incredibly boring. 90+ minutes of exposition is not my idea of a good movie.

Should we expect to see the Smith kids in a Nolan movie sometime soon?

I’m curious about your experience of time. Do you feel like life is moving really quickly? Is your music one way to sort of turn it over and reflect on it?

WILLOW: I mean, time for me, I can make it go slow or fast, however I please, and that’s how I know it doesn’t exist.

JADEN: It’s proven that how time moves for you depends on where you are in the universe. It’s relative to beings and other places. But on the level of being here on earth, if you are aware in a moment, one second can last a year. And if you are unaware, your whole childhood, your whole life can pass by in six seconds. But it’s also such a thing that you can get lost in.
I have nothing else to say at this time.

            • Finally saw Interstellar. Wow, wow, wow. Look, there was some cheesy dialogue and clunky scenes. But the sheer ambitiousness of the film made up for those flaws. I loved the visual interpretation of the worm hole, black hole, and the extra dimension. I thought the human aspect of it (love, hope, loneliness) was superbly done. A little long? Yeah, I guess. But I was engaged from start to finish. Even my 11 year-old daughter who makes it a point to locate bathrooms in all buildings she enters stayed for the whole film.

As far as a grade, I'm still kind of overwhelmed by Nolan just trying to pull something like this off. I'll buy it and watch it again, and maybe I'll find more fatal flaws. But for now, a solid A- for me.

While sitting in sacrament I was prompted to leave Church and go home to watch Wolf of Wall Street again. It was just as good as when I first saw it and I still don't get the objections to seeing Margot Robbie end her date with Jordan Belfort in an appropriate and respectful manner.

I wish. No In and Out here, but I'll order up a double double animal style as soon as I make it to Utah.
