Guardians of the Galaxy, Part 3. Best one in the series by far. Really really good.

Bring some freaking tissues though. Sheesh.

Dungeons and Dragons. Basically fantasy Star Trek where Chris Pine does his usual shtick. You don’t have to be a D&D nerd to enjoy it but it helps. Still, lots of laughs throughout. Solid B.

I hope this doesn't spoil the movie, but there is a bear that really enjoys cocaine in Cocaine Bear. I enjoyed the movie.

Wife is out of town for a few days. I might watch this with my 16 yo. What do you think? Looks like there's no sex.

John Wick 4. If you are a fan of the series, it is everything you are looking for. Really enjoyed it.

I watched the first one, and maybe the second one, too, based on recommendations from avsforum. They loved the bass in the movie. I wasn't that impressed with either the movie or the bass (probably because my subwoofer is woefully insufficient compared to the beasts that they put together over there.

Everyone should watch Navalny, the outstanding Oscar-winning documentary about the leading opposition voice in Russia, his attempted assassination, and the very clever way that he and his affiliates uncovered the truth that the attempt was orchestrated by the FSB, no doubt with Putin's blessing. Fascinating story that, among other things, underscores the malevolence of the Russian regime. I don't know if Navalny would be an effective leader when Putin is removed or dies () but he's a charismatic guy with a very down-to-earth family. The movie is available on HBO Max, and perhaps elsewhere.

Cocaine Bear was everything I hoped for and more

Broker. This is a movie that has many wonderful aspects, that when put together just misses the mark of an excellent film. Many sublime scenes are done so well with evocative lighting and great acting, that I’m still thinking about them. Super interesting plot also. But the pacing is just a little off and a little too long. Mrs. NWC liked it more that I did. I think she really appreciated the ‘what is a family’ aspect of it. I’m just glad I didn’t have to hold back tears on this one.

Despite my minor gripes, it is a really good film and I recommend it. B plus.

Vauban (I think it was on Amazon Prime). In French with English subtitles (which I sorely needed). I was completely unaware of the guy. It was interesting to see the interplay between the generals who wanted to attack and win the glory (damn the soldiers) and the siege engineers, who wanted to end the battle with as little bloodshed as possible. I was also unaware of the big deal with Louis XIV and the Huguenots. Vauban also argued for a more fair system of taxation. If XIV had implemented changes, then maybe XVI doesn't end up decapitated.

Catherine Called Birdy. Amazon.

My wife chose this and I had zero context going in. Basic summary is that Birdy is the only daughter of a minor Lord in, say, 1600s (edit: turns out its 1200??) England. She's 14 and goofy and funny and strong willed, etc. The family needs money and so they have to deal with making a match with a rich family to get a good dowry for Birdy.

Despite my super dry and boring summary, this is quite a funny and sort of uplifting story. Bella Ramsey, the actress who plays Birdy, is very very good (she was little Lyanna Mormont in GoT and is also in The Last of Us on HBO). It ends up being very touching to watch her relationship with her father change during the movie.

About 1/2 through, my 12 year old daughter came in and asked what we were watching. Turns out she had just finished reading the book in school. But that made her not want to watch the movie.

Second edit: I just remembered it was directed by Lena Dunham, which honestly explains some things, but don't let that dissuade you from seeing it.
