The "last movie I saw" thread

"Living". Really well-done period piece in 1950's London. The cinematography and sets are great; you really feel like you're in post-war London, even down to some well-represented British teeth. After watching the trailer I was worried that it would be too feel-good-y. But it had just enough sentiment without crossing the line. It has a very good contemplative ending. The main reason to see the movie, however, is to watch one of the best acting performances I've seen in a long while. Bill Nighy is just excellent as the aging bureaucrat who faces mortality. It will be a travesty if he isn't nominated for an Oscar.

B-plus.

Musical discussion in the Netflix thread prompted this post. Not sure where to post this. We saw Moulin Rouge the traveling Broadway musical in Las Vegas last weekend. Incredible. This is only the second "big time" musical I've seen. First one was Book of Mormon. I thoroughly enjoyed each time. I need to do this more often. When I've gone to run of the mill local musicals, I usually enjoy them. But the Broadway level productions are amazing.

I saw that with my kids in LA last August, so probably the same traveling group. It was really fun. My 14 year old son really enjoyed it. We also had great seats, like 8 rows back.

I didn't know what to expect, but the music was really fun. Great visual experience.

We saw it (Moulin Rouge) in SLC at the Eccles and loved it. Great show.

What the hell type of movie were they expecting???

Hey, we tried to engage them in polite debate over the nature of the movie. They threatened to call our parents, so, nothing was resolved.

I saw this movie in the theater, on an afternoon, with a bunch of bluehairs sitting next to me. I was there with several friends and we were laughing at all the appropriate times. The woman next to me was furious. She thought we were incredibly disrespectful and went so far as to say "there is nothing funny about this movie!!" She later leaned over and asked "which one of you is the guardian of that autistic kid", referencing my 45-year old friend who seemed to enjoy the movie the most (or at least the loudest).

What the hell type of movie were they expecting???

Temple of Doom was a ton of fun. Watching it nearly 40 years later it has some very impressive action scenes that more than hold up. A delight to behold.

And Short Round was such a great side-kick. Love that kid.

Yes! The Last Crusade was also more realistic with its 800+ year-old knight, killer cups, and healing grail.

But really, I don't even remember Temple of Doom that much. I was skipping it to make sure we saw The Last Crusade, which I like quite a bit in spite of (because of?) its departures from reality.

Temple of Doom was a ton of fun. Watching it nearly 40 years later it has some very impressive action scenes that more than hold up. A delight to behold.

You're right. I hated how unrealistic the alien one was compared to the one where the destroying angel flew out of the Ark of the Covenant and melted Nazi faces.

That's funny. Reviews are definitely mixed. It worked for us.

The Burbs with Tom Hanks?? You had never seen The Burbs?? That movie is a treasure.

I tried really hard to like it! Just couldn't do it.
