  • Took a quick trip to Seattle for Spring break. Went up the Columbia Tower to the Sky View Observatory. Reflections are a pain to deal with--made me go home a research solutions, I think a lenskirt is in my future.

          • Does anyone know what this thing is? At first I thought it was a hummingbird because it hovers like a hummingbird. But it doesn't look like any hummingbird I've ever seen before and it has a weird-looking proboscis. Its wings beat so fast they are a blur in the picture. I took these photos with a Canon Eos Rebel T31 with a 300mm zoom lens using the automatic settings. I don't know how to set the camera to capture the wings as they were beating so fast.

Nope. Sphinx moth. I've caught my share of those.

Edit: Ha, according to http://www.desertusa.com/insects/sphinx-moths.html it's also called a hawk moth and hummingbird moth.

I think you are right. In this case a white-lined sphinx moth, aka hummingbird moth. http://wildaboututah.org/sphinx-moths/

It looks pretty much like this picture of a white-lined sphinx month from butterfliesandmoths.org:

I didn't know such a thing existed. Cool.

                    • Went and visited the Terracotta Warriors exhibit at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle. May not be the right place for this, but if you can go, it's very much worth the effort. Pictures don't do these relics justice, and you can't get the right photographic perspective with so many people milling about and tight spacing. Most of these are shot too close with too wide of an angle.

                        • The Cliffs of Moher on Ireland's west coast have been featured in lots of movies, including The Princess Bride (Fezzig climbed up the Cliffs carrying everyone). During the day, the place is packed, but we were staying nearby (Doolin) and waited until long after the visitor's center had closed and the tour buses had left. There were very few people when we got there and we walked separately along the cliffs for over an hour taking various shots. Rather than post the best ones, I'll attach only one that my wife took of me (I'm the guy standing atop the cliff to the right), although she didn't get my good side. Sunset is a great time to visit when you want great lighting and the place pretty much to yourself.

Yeah, you go all the way over there and don't even do a handstand or a wheelie at the edge?

                              • Concert shots of "What Haunts You" at the Analog Cafe 05/28/17. 1/250 second with external flash mounted on camera. f/2.8 ISO 400. Small venue above a cafe/bar in Portland, OR. Way too loud and nearly unintelligible vocals. Mix was completely off, dominated by bass guitar and drums. I felt sorry for the bands, these small tours have got to be brutal. Drive yourself all over the country in rental vans to play in small clubs with sometimes just a few people. Play short set of 4 to 5 songs. Haul your own equipment up and down stairs. I've never shot in this kind of lighting before with flash that also involved movement. Wasn't sure the max flash sync speed of 1/250 was going to be enough to freeze the motion, but it was.
