"...you pointy-headed autopsy nerd. Do you think it's possible for you to post without using words like "hilarious," "absurd," "canard," and "truther"? Your bare assertions do not make it so. Maybe your reasoning is too stunted and your vocabulary is too limited to go without these epithets."

you obviously are bent on destroying the original spirit of this thread.
On the contrary, I'm trying to preserve the high level of picture quality in this thread.

then you are not being contrarian, you are agreeing with me. it is also obvious that you do not understand the original spirit of this thread. that could explain your seemingly incessant appetite for agreeing with what I am saying.

Uh huh...
Looks like I'm going to have to keep that 'seemingly incessant appetite' in check from now on.
In the meantime, please delete the pic.

If the thread's author, Art Vandelay, asks me to, then I will consider it. You have no standing to do such. we all have the right to learn how to improve our photography skills.

Fine. I guess I'll have to take this to the next level then.

This is a picture of our new puppy, about 12 weeks old. He likes to climb up in our dishwasher. I took it with my phone. IMG_3778.jpg

That's a great shot, NWC. I like how you rotated the phone sideways, as that adds to the hectic theme you are clearly trying to portray with the dog and the dirty dishes and the dent in the fridge. Nice use of irony. Might be interesting to find something else to frame the left side. Would be interesting to see this in black and white.

Yes! I'm so glad someone picked up on the dent in the fridge!
I'll work on the framing next time he's in the dishwasher.

These are tough situations for most cameras to handle, even the current ones. Really bright whites in full sun with dark shadows. Unless you do a bracketed series and combine with HDR software (some cameras can do this automatically), you either choose to have really dark areas with no detail or blow out the whites. In this case the area of the gull in full sun appears to be blown out/overexposed but you have detail and texture in the shaded concrete which is probably the right choice. Was this the Nikon 3300 that you purchased some time ago? If you shoot RAW in situations like this, you can sometimes use software to tame the hotspots.
Would I be racist if I said that I had this exact same problem one year at the US Open trying to take a picture of Vijay Singh wearing a white shirt?

Wildlife shots in which you can't see the eyes are usually less engaging (many photographers will do work on the eyes with software to enhance them). Also getting lower to the ground close to eye level of the subject helps. On the floor on the other side of the dishwasher would have been better. I would consider investing in a new set of dishes, something that works better with the red and brown tones. Time your photo such that none of the head is obscured by the dishes. The one dish out of place adds interest.

Good advice Swampfrog, but the new dishes comment was a little harsh, don't you think?

Buy some, get some good shots, and return them. Wannabe fashion photographers do it all the time.
I wish someone would have given me the same advice about the puppy!
