Robin those pics are rad. I even really dig the over-processed one.
Thanks. Everyone loves the over-processed one. Unfortunately, the original photo isn't very sharp, so it isn't ideal for print at a large scale... I've had to decline many requests to use that image for some print project. I'm heading back up to MT this summer, so hopefully I will have the chance to re-shoot that photo with my improved skills.
I wish there had been more light shining on the dark side of the rocky peninsula jutting into the crook of the oxbow. Maybe if I had shown up an hour earlier, the light would have been more accommodating. Ah well... it is one of the things I love about photography, how it creates intimate relationships with places. I will return to this spot again, and think about it in my daydreams. What I love most about photography is how it changes the way I see and think about the world around me.
Detail of support column and porch roof of Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, NC. I like it, though I'm still deciding whether the two pieces of sky are a distraction or not.

The last one I set on a carafe of water, held my hand over the flash, and took it in "sport" mode. I like the result. They're not looking at me, and the light is richer than a harsh flash would've been in a dark restaurant; I also like that it's not sharp.

A friend of mine took this at La Brisa, Zarcero, Costa Rica. Sigh, I want to be there today.

My favorite flower in the whole world is the Bougainvillea. Here's a photo I took last summer of one of mine. I'm always trying to figure out how to take better photos of them (also of California Poppies). I prefer to use photos as they come out of the camera with no touchup at all using Photoshop or other such software.
Any suggestions of what could be better in this photo?

Anyone have any experience with Canon refurbs? They only carry a 90 day limited warranty versus their standard 1 year for new. That makes me weary. Any thoughts?

My Canon S5-IS was a refurbished camera. I can't tell the difference between it and a new one other than the sticker on the bottom indicating that it was refurbished.

I had a Canon S1-IS that I had purchased new. Somewhere after taking 14,000 photos with it, the lens wouldn't extend when I turned it on, so it was basically dead. Because I liked the camera so much, I decided to get it fixed rather than buying a new one. I took it over to Wolf Camera and they said they could get it fixed for me. They charged me something like $128 and sent it off to whoever fixes those. About a month later they told me that they didn't have the right parts to fix it and would I mind having a refurbished Canon S5-IS instead - at no additional charge. They didn't need to twist my arm to get me to agree with that, since it was exactly what I wanted if I were willing to spend another $200+ on a new camera.
So the camera came from wherever Wolf Camera sends Canon cameras to be fixed.
