So what? Why is everyone getting their panties in a twist over this?
It seems like at this point your panties are more twisted over it than anyone else's.

I welcome that there's value in the technical side of things. Space Ghost's responses made it clear that he doesn't see value in the non-technical side of things. That's perhaps what started the panty-twisting. And I was fine with walking away from it until he cursed at Babs.

    • Please, everyone who was offended in this thread: please try to forgive the poster who offended you. I dont want anyone to leave the thread because everyone has valuable input and I enjoy everyone's comments. From the technically exacting suggestions to the frank enjoyment-of-the-moment approvals.

Like I said before, I really wasn't offended. I don't like how he responded to Babs, but that's really more of a CUF culture/rules thing than anything else.

Me? No. I was just giving a non-photog opinion on this is all. I missed the swearing. But she did compare him to MikeWaters first. That's below the belt. Anyhow, like I said, I still don't see what caused everyone get upset.

I just really want to know if that's Nelson's SIL on the wave.

          • I like Scott R Nelson's surfing picture. It is cool.

Don't get rid of the wave runners. The tow-in is part of the big wave experience. The best part about the pic (imo) is the goofy guy on the inside because he has fewer options. He has a split second to commit and if he chooses the wrong line, he may be more likely to get closed out. And I am imaging that that would be downright painful.

Also,is he trunking it? I have never seen a pic of Mavs where everyone wasn't decked out head to toe. Really interesting.

Kind of looks that way, doesn't it? I can't really tell. Maybe if Nelson wasn't such a minimalist and didn't try shooting with a 300m lens without a tripod or at least compensated with the correct shutter speed we'd be able to tell.

              I crack myself up sometimes.

My son-in-law was with me watching the surfers and explaining it all to me. Only the very best surfers have any business trying to surf waves like that.

Those Waverunners are for rescue and to get the next round of surfers out to the start area (whatever it's called) and to occasionally bring someone back to the beach. You have to paddle to catch the waves at Maverick's for the surf competition, they don't tow anybody onto the waves.

And I have no idea what the one surfer is wearing. That water is cold enough for a thick wetsuit in August, and that was in January.

You can have your thread. I won't bother you again. There's never been much worth seeing in here, anyhow.
I think there has been a ton of great stuff to see in here. I know that isn't the reason you are leaving, but this is one of my favorite CUF threads. As Katy, in the sweet yet to the point manner than only she possesses stated below, I hope we all take a deep breath and this thread can be something for everyone.

Oh, and you would be wise not to anger Babs. That's not a person you want gunning for you.
Personally I would gladly welcome suggestions like SG's on my photos. As Scott stated that is one of the reasons I started this thread. I didn't find SG's to be "brutal", but they also weren't my photos he was commenting on. Not that Space needs my defense, but from my perspective he is a talented photographer, very smart computer geek , and an engineer (which generally implies a high level of precision). I honestly don't think he was trying to be rude or condescending, but offering some advice and expertise. But as always what do I know...

I figured they were too close and too in focus for your liking. I mean I could actually tell there were people on the surfboards.

                    • wow, what a clusterfuck in the last three pages of this thread. I love all of you, so everyone be nice. SE.N, as you can see, Art also asked for input on becoming a better photog and that is really what has been taking place in this thread. IMO, if you want a thread to post pics and have people say, "nice photo" by all means start one.

Tim did come off a harsh to start this off and then when SG comes back snarky we all jump on him? Hell he was just helping out with some tips and then got accused of not enjoying the moment.

Then you have Surfah butchering the english language, which should never come from me, but I needed a comedic transition to clean this up.

So here is a pic I took in HK,

I call this one, Lawn Ornament. Wish I could have captured the pink better.

                      Hugs and Kisses,

It's too bad that planes like this rarely leave their hangars except for airshows. This was at the Livermore airport on Memorial Day. The photo looks better in a larger size, but I'm stuck with a maximum of 800 x 600 on my free PhotoBucket account.

Nice shot. I love the P-51D. The bubble canopy made all the difference in that airplane's appearance, not to mention the pilot's ability to see the enemy.
                        PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Dammit, my initial comment to Space Ghost wasn't a suggestion that this isn't a place for technical discussion. I appreciate the technical discussion. I simply suggested, more in passing than anything else, that it's okay sometimes to focus more on the moment than the settings. I'm all for the sharing of tips. I got bitched out by Space Ghost for simply sharing my opinion that there are multiple ways of approaching photography. Please recognize that and stop perpetuating the assumption that I was somehow calling Space Ghost on his tip-giving.
