That's what we do too. I love both going out with the kids and staying home. We really get into it. Already have some ideas for next year.

We bought just over 300 candy bars, with the rain today I think we will have about 60-80 left. That includes almost all the Sour Patch kids!

It dumped rain all day until about 3:00 pm, then it was blue clear skies. Awesome weather.

I ran out of candy. Like usual, I was too generous during the first hour.

I think I'm officially a curmudgeon. Turned off the porch light tonight.

Our neighborhood has a no trick or treating after 8:30 policy. There are signs posted at the entrance explicitly saying so. Our neighborhood attracts a lot of ToTers outside of our subdivision. Anyway by 8:30 our kids were done and in bed so I turned off the porch light. At 9 pm the door bell rang and I told Gidget I wasn't answering it. It rang again and she insisted. Then these assholes start ringing it over and over. Just as I am about to light up these punk kids, I open the door and am shocked to see an adult trick or treating with her young child. Dad is standing behind them in the middle of my lawn smoking. WTF people? Really? The mom thrusts her bag at me asking for candy. As I go to hand the young girl some candy, the little girl just takes her own handful of candy out of my bowl. I was so shocked I just closed the door. Gidget chided me for not being nice. It's been almost 3 hours and that whole thing is still steaming me.

Sheesh, you're tall enough, you don't need stilts. That would be really intimidating to little kids.

We gave out full sized candy bars this year as we have a few times in the past. Last year we kept a pretty good count of trick-or-treaters - between 120 & 130, depending on how many of the candy bars our four year old had eaten. My wife bought 6 boxes of thirty candy bars at costco, and we were through those by 7:30. We dug into the pantry for fruit snacks, rice krispy treats, and the "Primary stash" of a giant bag of dum-dums. By 8:30 we were down to about 50 dum-dums, and I'll need somewhere around 20 for our primary class, so we turned off the outside lights. And still people kept ringing. Dum-dums are gone, and we got down to the point of giving out 100 calorie packages of cheez-its. In total, we think we had 240-250 little visitors tonight.

To top off the evening, 20 minutes ago (10:05), we had some pukes knock and then ring our doorbell four times - every light in the house is off. When I finally got off the couch to tell them to go away the little bitches (gender neutral use of the word) were mad that I didn't have any snickers for them. They'd heard on Twitter from a friend that we had full sized candy bars, which explains why we had 2X as many people drop by this year as last. Twitter has made it's impact on Trick-or-Treating - and we can't compete with that. No more full sized candy bars from us...

The ones that really bug me are the gangs of 12 - 13 year olds being ferried around by soccer moms in minivans who are still at it at 9:00 pm and literally have a pillowcase so full of candy that they can't carry it with one hand. I could see a kid in their own thinking that such behavior was a good idea. But this was being sanctioned and facilitated by adults.

My wife picked it up at Costco several years ago. We haven't seen them for sale anywhere since (other than ebay). It is basically an animatronic head with a wireless mic. When you talk in the mic, your voice is amplified through the head and the head lights up and moves from side to side and the mouth moves. So I sit in a small room next to the front door and watch out the window and when the kids walk up the sidewalk I start talking to them in a disguised voice. If I recognize them I say their names. When they say something I will respond so they know that it is not just a recorded voice. They go nuts. Big kids and parents love it. Little kids either love it or are scared to death by it. Sometimes I think about retiring it, but it is kind of a tradition now. If I am not on the mic, some of them won't leave until I fire it up. Good times.

We switched out all of our front porch lights with black lights this year. But because the black light incandescence are so pansy, it apparently just appeared that we weren't home. This became apparent once the cul de sac was crawling with little crawlers and our door never knocked. We made immediate remedy and handed out fistfuls of candy but still have WAY too much left over.

Check my voicemails from last night and there was one from my home teaching companion, really nice guy. He said that depending on when I wrapped up ToT with my kids, maybe I wanted to join him in Provo for a Foreigner concert.

Foreigner is a band best seen at a county fair or a street festival. You arent really there for the show but you have about 30 minutes to spare to sit down and listen to their 5 or 6 good songs, check email, text, etc.
