The arguments against putting fluoride in the water are beyond idiotic.

Doesn't Texas have naturally occurring fluoride in the water?

I grew up in a place where there was fluoride in the municipal water, but we didn't have municipal water at my house. The water lines didn't come out to our house, so we had to dig a well and install a pump. We didn't have fluoride in our household water.

But still, four kids in my family growing up, zero cavities in any of us. My oldest has already had problems and I think it's because I didn't take care of her teeth well enough. Part of that is I take good teeth for granted because it seemed it was a given in my family growing up. My mother told me it was in fact because my father was fastidious in brushing our teeth when we were young and was hellbent on his kids not having problems. The second reason is because my parents didn't have a bunch of sugary garbage around the house. Since the problems my oldest has had have come to light, I have adopted my dad's habits.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

If we had the mind control drugs in the water, there wouldn't be any problem getting the people to allow fluoride in the water. Maybe we've been approaching this thing backwards.

Went to the dentist for the first time in 2 years. I randomly picked one from my health care list and I think I hit a homerun. It started off with me signing some stuff with the help of office admin. She was a young and well endowed lady that was wearing a low cut shirt and didn't mind leaning over (not at my request) to show me where to sign stuff. Then as I was moved to my chair I noticed that there is a certain quality of people that are employed at this office, which includes young, female and at least somewhat attractive. Then I met the dentist, who was a very attractive young lady (around 30 years old) and was very friendly. I started to wonder if my gray hair is making people think I'm older and they can seduce me with the whole appearance they are putting on but either way I don't mind.

Everything was high tech from the digital x-rays to the video screen they had on the chair that allowed me to see everything they were doing up until the actual cleaning. At one point they asked if I wanted to watch TV on the big screen on the wall, which I declined since it was 3pm and I didn't want to watch Judge Judy.

Needless to say, I'm kind of looking forward to going back in 6 months and I might eat more sweets and brush less just so I can spend more time in the chair

I'd like to hear more about this hi-tech dentist using digital x-rays and hanging video screens on the wall. And you can watch TV, as well? Sounds really advanced.

My dentist no longer accepts my insurance, so I had to find a new dentist. I asked around and chooe one of the recommended options that is convenient in location and hours for me. Tech had some difficulty with the x-rays, but she did tell me I have REALLY long roots. So there's that.

Zero cavities, zero teeth bothering me. Dentist's recommended treatment over the next 6 months includes 5 crowns, 2 onlays, and replacing 3 fillings. WTF! $5680 in recommended work (that's out of pocket, after insurance). Uh, yeah, not happening. While i'm tempted to switch to a different dentist, I think i may go somewhere and pay out-of-pocket for a second opinion. Assuming I don't need the work done, I think i'll keep going to this dentist for my checkups and cleanings, since they don't make any money on those.

This happened to us about 20 years ago, when we were poor. My wife had a new dentist that said she needed a similar amount of work at a similar price. She got a second opinion and the dentist said she was fine. 20+ years later, and none of the issues the first dentist found have become a problem. There are a lot of shady dentists out there, including one or two of my friends.

You should absolutely get a second opinion. Tons of unethical dentists.

Is the dentist close to work, or close to home?

I have know a dentist close to your work that is pretty good.

Edit: scratch that. You don't want these dentists.

Why don't I want these dentists? I'm still planning on having a second opinion. If I need the work (or some of it), I would certainly consider getting it done by the second doc, assuming their rates are same or better.

My former dentist was about halfway between work and home, but they did 4:30pm appointments, so it was convenient to leave the office a little early and do my checkup/cleaning on the way home. The new office is close to home. They do 7:30 am appointments, so my plan was to hit them on the way into the office. But pretty much any location between the office and my house will would work.

We are currently transitioning from one dentist to another (basically following the hygienist, who is a friend of ours). The first dentist was great, but she sold her practice to a large dental company (she's still the dentist) that is now pushing the staff to have people do a lot of extra procedures. Basically, trying to milk the patients for all their insurance will allow. I still really like the dentist, but our hygienist friend walked out when she found out what the new company was doing because she wasn't comfortable with that. I figured that was sort of the thing you were looking to get away from. I don't know if this new push extends to random crowns, etc., but it probably does. Her practice is right on the other side of Russell from your office.

The new dentist, who I haven't seen yet but everyone else in my family has, is in the Von's shopping center on Durango and Warm Springs. He won't gouge you on prices or recommend unnecessary services, but I understand he's getting old. My wife said she thought his hands were a little shaky (!), which is probably not what you want in a dentist. Nevertheless, she likes him and our hygienist friend likes him. This same hygienist correctly steered us away from the BIL dentist of our mutual friend, who I saw for a few years and was horrible.
