I took the plunge yesterday and had all of my teeth on the top of my mouth replaced with impants. They put the bases into the jaw and added temporaries. I'll be on soft foods (If you can't cut it with a plastic fork you can't eat it) until basically Halloween. Then I get the permanents in and will be able to bite into an apple for the first time since 1988 (I was in an accident in the 7th grade that knocked out a bunch of teeth). Yay for implants!

Dare I ask how much cash that's setting you back?

I had my bottom back molar extracted because it had a crack in the root. I had an implant put in, and it was crazy how long the process was to get a crown put on it.

To make matters worse, the periodontist sent the wrong tool over to my dentist, so taking the impression for the crown took forever, involving calls to the manufacturer and getting the right tool driven over from the periodontist.

That lasted a year or so and then the implant had to be removed and another one put in. Not surprisingly, the periodontist sent the wrong tool over again the second time. And once the right tool was there, my dentist messed up the impression, so the crown wouldn't fit.

Finally got it right, and it's been working great for six months now. Fingers crossed.

                Congrats - I think.

I was at the periodontist earlier this week getting an implant checked out that was put in back in December. I've got an appointment to be fitted for a crown in 3 weeks, at which time the dentist is going to put in a post for an implant on the other side of my mouth. For the last 4 months I've been missing an upper molar on one side and a lower molar on the other. Been going back and forth as far as chewing and what I can chew. Really looking forward to getting the crowns in and hopefully having a normal mouth for a minute.

Went to the dentist this morning. He says one of my silver fillings (which is probabl over 20 years old) is cracked and I need a crown. He also says because the filling is right next to the other tooth with a filing that that tooth will also need a crown. Neither tooth hurts and neither is sensitive to anything (hot or cold). The last time I saw the dentist he wanted to put a crown on another tooth on teh opposite side of my mouth, which we did.

Am I wrong to be skeptical that I need a crown and that the dentist has a boat payment he needs to make? I'm inclined to wait until it hurts or is sensitive before going ahead with it all. The total bill for both crowns would be $3,190. I also haven't loved the previous crown that I got. It feels pretty normal now but I'm not sure if it will ever feel totally normal.

So about 4 years ago, I received a letter from my dentist informing me that they would not be accepting my insurance any longer. I was bummed, because I like my dentist, but I figured I wasn't going to pay for something out of pocket when I already pay for the insurance for my family (and thus, myself). So I switched. First visit to the new dentist and they took x-rays and then took me back into an office where I sat with her assistant/office manager who walked me through the $5-7k of dental work I needed. But if I was willing to commit to all of it, they would do it for $3750 out the door. This felt very weird, of course, and I asked to talk to the dentist directly. The dentist came in an explained how this wasn't about fixing cavities or stuff, this was to make sure my mouth didn't break down in the next 15 years. "I can fix cavities forever, but if this doesn't get fixed, you'll eventually need dentures."

I was not convinced. I made an appointment and went back to my old dentist and paid cash. I got the records from this new dentist who had quoted me all the work (with some effort--they did not want to give them to me) and had them sent over. My dentist reviewed them and was like "Donut, I have no idea what she is talking about. None of this even makes any sense." So I found a group insurance plan through my local bar chapter which costs me $300/year and my new/old dentists accepts it.

There are some shysters out there for sure.

Absolutely you should get a second opinion. Dentists are some of the most unethical people out there. I can tell tons of war stories about this.

So there's that.

Zero cavities, zero teeth bothering me. Dentist's recommended treatment over the next 6 months includes 5 crowns, 2 onlays, and replacing 3 fillings. WTF! $5680 in recommended work (that's out of pocket, after insurance). Uh, yeah, not happening. While i'm tempted to switch to a different dentist, I think i may go somewhere and pay out-of-pocket for a second opinion. Assuming I don't need the work done, I think i'll keep going to this dentist for my checkups and cleanings, since they don't make any money on those.

huh. What if I told you you could get that done for *under $500? You'll need a passport...

*$250 each. $320 if you want a zirconia crown. The price goes up to $500 if they have to redo the root canal.
