I have a Suzuki Volusia (they've since changed the name to the Boulevard). Use go to 4-5 rallies or poker runs per year. I used to go the Memorial Day weekend rally in Evanston every year, but haven't been in a few years.

I don't drink anymore, so motorcycle rallies don't have near the appeal that they once did. They're a lot like tailgate parties that way.

How did you survive the Harley rider's disdain for your superior ride? Did you get tired of waiting for them at the destination when they stopped to help fix each others bikes?

Mostly because Harley guys suffer mightily from the smug disease.

Well that and I felt like teasing a certain rider/board member with a bike named after a chick.

Why would you ever name a bike after a guy? The sexual symbolism in riding is such that I think that would be quite homosexual. Not that there is anything wrong with that if people swing that way.

Cassandra is not long for my garage, I'm afraid. I had a buyer lined up but he had a heart attack while he was seeking financing. I spend too much time with my other mistress, Lola.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

Not enough time and a really close call. I had flashes of my own mortality in a way I'd rather not repeat.

Well then, by all means... carry on.

If I was gonna be completely honest. My bike's not a Harley either. It's a Big Dog, and her name is Pamela... Pam for short.

Been there. I ride so defensively now that most of the fun of street riding is removed.

As noted, I have 30k+ miles in the saddle, mostly on LA freeways. Nearly all of my close calls came in the first two years of riding. In LA we have the advantage of being able to split lanes, which, IMHO, makes riding safer. Most of my close calls fall into one of two categories -- abrupt stops by the person in front of me, and drivers rapidly switching lanes without signaling or seeing me coming. The ability to split lanes significantly mitigates both risks. There are no cars stopping abruptly in front of the rider when he is riding the paint, and the rider can typically work it so that he passes between side-by-side cars when cutting through traffic. It is much more likely that a driver will see an adjacent car than it is that he will see a bike, which makes passing between adjacent cars more safe. There is also the advantage that CHiPs don't stop bikes that ride the gap between the HOV lane and the rest of the freeway. That space has become a de facto motorcycle lane.

I have a couple of good friends with Harley's, and they like to give me a hard time. I always tell them that my bike has 35,000 miles on it and has never been in the shop. Then I ask them how many times their bikes have been in the shop. That usually shuts them up.

I will say that I have had nothing more than routine maintenance done on mine. Well, a bad battery too, but I never count those. 40k miles on it now.

I wish we could split lanes here. I remember riding in California and loved riding on the Coast Highway.

The military tried hard to suck the fun out of riding motorcycles with all the restrictions they put on riding... but we jumped through the hoops anyway.

I think splitting lanes was great. I'm not sure it would work here in Utah. Cars expect motorcycles and are more accustomed to them out there probably due to the more intense traffic and the weather. Here... you are really on your own.

I've been on that ride twice before. It's the Gift of Life drive. I still have the T-shirts. Here are a couple of bikes I saw on those rides that I liked:

This next one isn't from the Gift of Life ride, but from an Evanston Memorial Ride. I just really like the tank:

Edit: Here's a picture of my bike before the studded seats and back rest:
