He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch. He was a fierce armadillo hunter. At Camp David, his favorite activity was chasing golf balls on the chipping green. Barney guarded the South Lawn entrance of the White House as if he were a Secret Service agent. He wandered the halls of the West Wing looking for treats from his many friends. He starred in Barney Cam and gave the American people Christmas tours of the White House. Barney greeted Queens, Heads of State, and Prime Ministers. He was always polite and never jumped in their laps. Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.'"

Wow. I can't imagine getting a dog back after that long.

Last week a stray maltese wandered into our office. It didn't have any tags, but we took it into a pet store to have it scanned for a chip. It indeed did have a chip and we called the owner, who said the dog had disappeared four years ago. Presumably it had been stolen. Anyway, she was really happy to get her dog back.

Our dog was attacked by a much larger dog the other day. The attack was unprovoked and the dog had broken from the young child walking it to cross a field to get at our dog from behind. Noah managed to pick her up, but the other dog took a bite out of her. Two visits to the vet so far, and she'll be okay.

So odd that the owners suggested we split the vet bills at first. Now it appears they are going to pay the full amount for "the incident between our two dogs."

Idiots.

I take pepper spray with me when I walk our dog, because of a couple of similar incidents. Glad yours is OK.

Time for an update:

Due to some family circumstances, we've adopted three large chickens and a chicken coop. (The kids have named the "fattest one" Margaret, the other two are unnamed. I can't explain this.) As I type this:

- my 18 month old boy is playing inside the chicken coop
- the dog is trying to play with/chase the chickens
- perched on the fence Margaret and Company seem totally uninterested in everything
- and my 7 year old daughter is frantic worrying about it all
- my 3 year old boy, overcome with excitement, is running around the chicken yard yelling incomprehensively

I should get a picture of this.

Edit: 4 minutes after posting, the three year old has stripped down to his underwear, which he prefers to wear backwards. (What up, Chris? I'm about to.) Babs is right, I should be blogging this.

Here is our new little bundle of fur.





I was all set to get my daughter this dog for her birthday, but she was sold before we could come to an agreement on the price.



My daughter was pretty upset. I set up an auto alert on my Craigslist app and the black labradoodle popped up about 4 hours later. I called and found out that the family that bought her just had a baby and decided they couldn't give the puppy the time it needed. The puppy was born July 4th and her name is Liberty.

Well, our Golden Retriever, Tucker, finally succumbed to cancer over the weekend.

The steroids kept him comfortable and active for a few weeks, but he went downhill quick.

We put him to sleep on Friday night.

Sorry, PU. We're just 6 weeks out from saying good-bye to our own old girl. I feel for you. We still have her photo up; that helps.
