I hate it when people say that, or when they say, "Don't worry, he won't bite." as their dog approaches barking and growling.
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Agree. People who don't control their dogs shouldn't have dogs.

        Agreed. Same with their children.

A German Shepherd who had "never bitten anyone his entire life and was the nicest dog you'd ever want to see" took a chunk out of my lower calf when I was on a run two years ago. It was apparently my fault, because I "startled" him.

I think I have the distinction of being the only person I know who's been bitten by a Golden Retriever. I even knew the dog. I was the third person he had chomped on, so he went away to a farm to live.

This is my concern as well. No matter how you train your dog, you cant control other people. Your kids have a friend come over, that kid misbehaves and pulls the dogs tail or does something the dog doesn't like. End of story.

When I was a kid, that is exactly how our golden retriever ended up living on a farm. After 5 years of being the most gentle dog ever, he bit a neighbor kid and my niece within a few weeks of each other.

There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

Yeah. Not only was I repeatedly menaced by the neighbor's German Shepherd when I was a young lad, there was one in Guatemala that was particularly demonic and specifically targeted the missionaries. He took a chunk out of my comp's calf and later on got a piece of the bottom of my standard-issue Doc Martin.

It was a Shepherd that got me, too.

They made him a police dog after that.

                          • 48 hour update:

-The puppy is really taking a shine to my 8 year old. His whole back half erupts in wags as soon as my boy appears. They played for two hours in the backyard until after sunset last night.

-The boy got up at 6:30 am, "walked" the dog, fed him, and congratulated on him pooping outside. I'm very glad he's taking to the responsibility of having a dog.

-Puppy exam and shots set up for this afternoon.

I will continue to post updates until:
                            - the dog bites someone, at which point the dog is dead and updates are unnecessary
                            - we realize that many (most?) of the biting stories in this thread concern "good breed" dogs
                            - wuap's righteous indignation at my choice of pet overflows and consumes us all.

I was down at the pound a few weeks ago and about half of the dogs in there are pits- because there is a pretty big contingent of white trash that continues to abuse their animals thinking it's tuff and cool to have a ruined dog. Some of those dogs were surly, but most were just sad. I think your dog's gonna be just fine.
