I saw him talk at at a forum in BYU, probably sponsored by the theater department. He seemed like a nice guy. He was also respectful to the audience. I remember one person bring up a Capra quote saying something to the effect of film should be uplifting, and asked him how he squared that with his recent film 'An Indecent Proposal'. It was kind of a gotcha question, and he just said he thought it was an interesting story and he wanted to tell it. Any my memory is hazy but I think the next questioner started off by saying 'I watch The Natural every weekend', and he jokingly responded 'not Indecent Proposal?', which got a good laugh.

I think his prime was before me, but I remember liking The Sting when I watched it as a kid. All the Presidents Men is a solid film. Thought Sneakers was pretty good. I should probably watch Ordinary People.

I watched Jeremiah Johnson recently when it was on the Grit station. One of my favorites. I bet he had a blast making that in various locations throughout Utah.

the story goes that the studio deposited $4 million in a bank in Salt Lake City and said “that’s all you get” they then waited for 3 years to release the film because they didn’t think there was an audience for it. It went on to make $45 million.

Ordinary People is in my top ten. Several truly great performances, including Mary Tyler Moore's.

Finished Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and plan to watch A River Runs Through It next. His narration was so soothing. The Sting and The Presidents Men.

D'Angelo is one of the all time greats. Seriously, incredible artist. I was hoping that we would get that 4th album. I guess need to listen to all his albums today.

One a few more terms. Led republican farmers voted for him because he supported them. Lost to Dirk Kempthorne in Senate race then a few times to Mike Simpson in house race.

James Watson, one of the discoverers of the shape of DNA, dead at 97. His and Crick's one page paper in Nature has one of the all-time low key flexes:

It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material.

I read his biography a long time ago. It was a decent read, though from what I remember it short-changed essential work from other researchers. At the very least Franklin should have been a coauthor. He also faded from the spotlight after some openly racist statements.

I saw that this morning and it feels like a big loss. He’s one of the great orators of the church. He’s got at least a dozen or so talks that I’d call very influential on me. RIP.

When I was a full believer, JRH filled my soul.

The father of my brothers best mission friend was called to be a mission president. A couple of months before entering the MTC, he went into the guest room of their large bountiful home and blew his brains out. The family was distraught. Quickly, they became aware of a long-term mistress. JRH spoke to the family after the funeral and told them that the Lord understood why he did what he did and assured them there was a path to redemption. It provided a ton of much-needed comfort to the family.

I had an institute teacher tell me about a time when JRH was the visiting authority at stake conference in NC. Every ward in the state was struggling with attendance and filing callings, etc. at the time, they also had an abysmal HT%. He started off the talk asking for root causes for the stake’s struggles. He’s wrote the answers down on the chalk board. After a bit he wrote 12% on the chalk board. Looked at the brethren and said this is why and punched the 12% (their ht %) and put a big crack in the chalkboard. In retrospect, I find this a little unhinged, but when I heard the story, I loved his fire.
