I want a machine that will work not only now but for the next 5 years but have no idea what would be required later on as far as RAM goes

Go with the 1TB drive and get a cheap off-brand external drive (or two) if you need it.
Good point, although I have a 3tb external drive already. I just haven't been happy with the speed and wonder if having the drive internal increases the speed. Right now it's hooked up through a USB cable but maybe I can use firewire or something else to increase the speed?

Finally, I would buy a Mac Mini and then buy a good quality off-brand monitor. Not only would you save a ton of money, but if you Mini ever goes out you could replace it without paying to replace the monitor at the same time. I have never understood why anyone would go with iMac where the monitor and CPU are integrated.
Good suggestion and I'll look into this. I once considered getting a mac mini and hooking it up to our main tv, but then I found the Apple tv and we have a couple iPads so I just don't really need to do something like that....although replacing the iMac with a mini is a good suggestion.

Ditch the superdrive and buy an equivalent off-brand USB optical drive if you need it for a fraction of the cost.

Moli, if you can't do the Mac Pro then you should go with the Hackintosh. A Mac mini and some off-brand monitor would not be good for your image... Consult the handbook:

LOL. I'd go Mac Mini too like Jeff suggested. I plan on picking one up in the next year.

Although the A10 Thunderbolt is not that fast of a plane.

ER can't afford one apple tv, let alone two, and he is a doctor.

You need to spend more time in the Obamacare thread where you'll learn more about the demise of the medical profession. I'm sure ER is just taking precaution.

                  • So what's the difference between these two processors?:

                    3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5
                    2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

I really have no baseline on which to set but the i7 sounds more cool and I'd like this thing to last a number of years.

is 2.5ghz what your current imac has? if you can buy an imac right now with a 2.5ghz i5, i would be surprised.

That was what the base mac mini model offers right now. I changed my post (you are quick!) to include the highest processor offered for the mac mini, which is the 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

I have no idea what is in my computer back home. I bought it in late 2008/early 2009.

                          • In case you suspected that Apple was FOS on the performance improvements for the solid state storage on the new MBP.

I also picked up one of these so I could use my SSD drive from my old laptop as an external thunderbolt on the MBP. It's not too shabby either.

The problem is the HD4000 gpu and flash. It is a bug in chrome at the moment, as a fix try downloading gfxcard status and using 'dedicated only'. If you don't want to do that you can try going to 'chrome://flags' and set GPU compositing to 'disabled'. Apart from that use safari for anything with flash.
Hmm... so chrome crashes your computer's GPU?
