Let's say someone buys a car with dark paint and wants to make sure it looks good for a long time. Is one of those 3M paint protection films worth it, or is it better to just touch up rock chips?

Definitely worth it.

It is never better to touch up rock chips (instead of using the clear coat) because the surface of the car will still be porous, look uneven, and be subjected to rust over time. Rock chip repair is only a stop-gap to delay the inevitable, it isnt a true fix unless you reseal the chip.

3M coating is actually not best in class, although you were probably referring generically to that style of clear coat as opposed to a specific brand. I recently put a clear coat on my car and I love it. The latest clear coats have micro punctures in them (think microscopic jersey mesh...sexy!) which allows the coat to take on wax and look really sharp. In fact, the more you wax, the better, as it keeps the coat supple. You do have to use liquid wax and avoid a rotary buffer (buffer takes longer, anyway) and if you dont hand wash your car, make sure the car wash uses soft foam brushes, not that wiry stuff that scratches your paint.

On the advice of my idiot brother (a cop), I decided to fight a $100 speeding ticket. I have an attorney friend who told me that he'd take care of it. They dropped the ticket, if I donated some $$$ to the local crimestoppers unit and took an online defensive driving course. $250 bucks and 8 hours later (I thought the course was a quickie!) I have satisfied the demands of justice.

Wish I had just paid the ticket.

I have never fought a ticket. Seems like you would only do that if you really weren't speeding and of course I was guilty as charged every time.

I was taking my son to a wrestling tournament, and was accelerating towards 55 pmh in a 45 zone (but the 55 mph sign was visible just ahead). While to cop was writing my ticket up I texted my brother, and he said to fight it. Wish my brother had ignored my advice and just stuck to looking up license plates for Dadx3.

many states allow for increased speeds above the limit depending on various factors (flow of traffic, road conditions, weather, etc), so speeding in and of itself is only part of the process.

If you notice, cops always ask a stupid question when they pull you over. It is always best to not answer it because the question is always geared towards admitting guilt. "Do you know why I pulled you over?" "Do you know how fast you were going?" "Are you in a hurry to get home?" "would you mind stepping out of the car, ma'am, I just wanted to take a quick look at that cute little outfit you have on." etc...
