I'm glad the LDS Church is such a love inspiring, unifying element in people's lives.

If nothing else it certainly unifies your intellectually lazy narrative of what is wrong with the world. You probably don't realize that by blaming it for all manner of silly things you cheapen the legitimate criticisms that can be made. It is interesting that a persons who is otherwise thoughtful is completely incapable of a nuanced view when it comes to the church, but it is always much harder to forgive disappointment than actual harm.

Waters feels passionate about Prop. 8. His brother, whom he loves, is a gay man in San Francisco. Some of his best stuff has been arguing against Proposition 8. His rejoinder to the LDS pamphlet was a classic, for the ages. On the other hand, some on CG supported Prop. 8 unhappily. I think they were particularly vexed by Waters' fiery attacks on Prop. 8. Of course, I didn't bother them as much because I'm an apostate, and I don't have a gay brother. Tex wasn't bothered by me or Waters because he was happily supportive of the LDS position, or, perhaps more accurately, Tex defends all LDS absent conscience, like a paid advocate. But some supported Prop. 8 even though they knew better; some who may have wanted to get away from Waters may have been subconsciously stricken by a guilty conscience. All the torment associated with Prop. 8 may also have been what caused Waters to go a little nuts.

I will grant you all of that. As long as your criterion is, "Who has something interesting to say," few people are going to top Waters. He is the 'cowbell' of BYU sports and religion boards. Sure, beautiful music can be made without him, but all bands are better with a resident cowbell player. CUF needs more cowbell. You should convince Mike and Farrah to come over here. There are plenty here who love them and consider them to be good friends. They are missed, and ought to be among their friends. I, for my part, would do all I could (short of leaving) to make them comfortable, which is to say that I would forget our past.

Agreed. Which is exactly why most of us sincerely hope that he will see fit to join us at some point.

The ONLY difference between this board and CG is that this one is managed by a committee rather than one person. It seems to me that this should have nothing to do with someone's ability or opportunity to participate in the dialogue.

That being said, I can understand and respect his reluctance given the awkwardness of how this board came to be. I just hope time will heal things.
