Its original purpose was simply a place for those who had been punished by Cougarboard's administrator for soliciting members to the new board could speak without CBers being able to see us. That was its original purpose.

And then we admitted somebody with rather loose admission policies, almost everybody was granted entrance, until one guy, I forgot his name, it may have been Akilii, reported all of our planned shenanigans over CB, we would plan little stunts there, to El Jefe. That was it's original purpose. Akili, and Grapevine, who uttered some racial epithets that got him banned, caused the Crypt to become somewhat excluding, i.e., excluding those who would report to El Jefe.

It later morphed into a place where you could feel more at ease to let your guard down, pun intended. So when Lebowski got in charge of the Crypt, he started counting votes and determining who could get in and when a vote would take place. And then people started voting against those they didn't like or trust with more honest thoughts as opposed to the general trolling and sarcasm that ravages the CG countryside.

It just seems in all your discussions, the original genesis of the Crypt is lost.

This is an interesting summary. The motivation stated here is what I've always heard. But the latter part makes it sound as though Lebowski proposed a voting system and implemented it. Voting had been in place over a year before Lebowski agreed to manage the admissions process.
