  • Utah QB Situation

I would expect that KW would name a starter by the end of practice today. I think that with a week to go, the team needs to have an "official" starter to start preparing for the Aggies...especially with the prospect of 3 starters not playing in that game.

Cain gives the Utes the versitility to run the spread more freely than Wynn does...he just needs to work on accuracy (from what I've read).

Wynn seems to have the big arm and *may* have more "big play" ability, but starting him, for me, still seems like a move towards the future.

Seems like Cain will be the guy, and I'm fairly comfortable with that. If there is a "Louks" package run, DeVonte Christopher could be the guy to do that.

    One week to go!

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

He may name it, but I don't think he'll announce it.

Yep, I think Whit and the team have known the starting QB (*cough*Cain*cough*) since early this week, but they won't make any official announcement.

Zane Taylor was interviewed on the radio yesterday afternoon, and it was obvious that 1) he knew who the starter was and 2) he had been clearly instructed not to say ANYTHING that might indicate which QB had the nod.

I think it's a little silly to play this game with the media and Coach Anderson, but that's Whitt's perogative. Is he really worried about Utah State?

Im with BO. I think everyone's been told it is Cain (or they will be told today) but not to breathe a word.

I think by next Tuesday it will be the world's worst kept secret, so Whit will just announce that it is Cain.

I think Utah's schedule is perfect for breaking in two rookie QBs, especially the first 2 games.

I also think on the third game either Cain or Wynn will get hurt and then fans will start to heavily criticize Whit for his poor handling of Louks. If Whit would have just kept his mouth shut and accorded Louks the respect that he deserves for his D1 experience, I think the utes would have kept Louks on defense, and could have brought him back in case of injury. At the very least, they would have kept some speed at Louks' position.

The Utes have a very good track record of converting QBs to other positions, and playing them effectively in their new roles. (Wasnt Weddle a QB in HS?) All they had to do was work quietly behind the scenes with Louks, and not humiliate him in public with the QB derby.

              The Louks situation is interesting.

On the one hand, by letting Louks know fairly early on that his future at Utah was at Safety and allowing him the opportunity to transfer before the season, thus enabling him to use his redshirt Whitt did him a favor.

On the other hand, the Louks transfer leaves the team with 3 QBs that have no D1 experience and will require Wynn's eligibility clock to start running.

Having said all that, I think he's handled this situation wayyyyy better than he did Grady and Ratliff. He has made this a true competition, and it appears (at least to me with my red glasses on) that Cain has stepped up and earned the job.

I agree that Cain will likely start. I will be surprised if Wynn doesn't play a little in the first 2 games.

I thought he handled Ratfill better than Grady. Although, now with Rat in the NFL, I wonder just how good he really was? We'll never know. I've heard Rat described as a game QB: he sucks in practice but steps up when it's all on the line. I'd go further: Rat was a Big Game QB. Didnt he run amok in the mud in San Francisco?

And nobody handled it worse than MAFU handled Alex Smith. That was an abomination. No excuse to burn an entire red shirt year by losing your temper for what, like 3 plays? 16 minutes?

Urban Meyer was the best thing that ever happened to Alex Smith.

True on all accounts. He should've never put Grady in vs. UCLA and yes, Smith should not have taken 4 snaps at the cost of his redshirt.

I hope the same thing doesn't happen to Wynn.

Is Griff Robles just not ready after his mission? Why was Manis moved back to QB? Utah better hope Cain is the answer or they may be in trouble.

                        Manis is an emergency QB.

The idea is to redshirt Robles this year because he is not ready. Reports are that he has looked pretty good in practice, but with such limited access, who really knows.

Why is Cain now the front runner? I thought Wynn was?

Consistency, good with the option, fewer mistakes. Getting better at the deep ball.

Similar question. Wynn, at one point, was named the starter, correct? Has KW ever come out and said competition is open again or that Wynn has lost that job?

Seems to me that until Whitingham says something different, a starter has already been named and that guy is Wynn.
