    1) 2nd and 4 from mid-field, calling two trick plays leading to our turning it over on downs. They scored a TD on the short field. Brutal. I realize Romney catches that ball 95 out of 100 times. But Zach had so much green grass in front of him he could have run a very long way. That's a good play call for an over aggressive D on 4th and 1. But there was really no reason to risk the pass.

    2) The backwards run. Bonehead error that cost us the possession and critical field position by a player who had not played a significant role yet in his career. Hopefully this is not his defining moment as a cougar.

After the final play ended on the 1 yd line, I wasn't really mad anymore. I just smiled and felt OK with the effort under the circumstance. Zach was money on that last drive. Just wish he had thrown to a player in the end zone.

Another Kalani loss to a team with lesser talent. But he's had a few go the other way too. Just make sure it doesn't carry over to SDSU. I don't like them.
This always seems to be an issue but add mismanagement of timeouts in tbe second half to the infuriating list. I think the two we burned early were on a 3rd and 20 and on a punt return where there was no danger of CC faking it. It is very likely Zach gets us the win on that last drive if he had 3 timeouts.

Kalani said we were in danger of getting penalized for 12 men on the field. In that case, still a game management flub but a potentially game-saving time out.

I really wish we had a couple days to game plan-- we really looked baffled. All these weapons and no idea how to use them. I wish we hadn't punted and I wish we'd attempted to replicate that 95-yard touchdown that was called back. That's all.
I get that BYU didn't get time to gameplan, but doesn't this really only matter for the defence? What excuse does the offense have? BYU always seema to struggle against an aggressive and quick defense. But they never seem to be abke to neutralize it. I'm not sure more game prep helps against CC's defensive strategy. There's a decade of evidence that BYU doeant know how to deal with it.

And one was called immediately after a CC timeout was finished, right? Stuff like that can't happen in a game like this.

I think this was on the defense, unfortunately. Those crazy extended drives were the entire key to CC having a shot. Our offense was always going to get it in, but only if they get to see the field. Yes, they wasted a couple of opportunities (like punting on 4th and 5) but we needed some 3rd down stops that just weren't there.

Ok, I can see that. So was it a scheme or personnel issue?

I'd say scheme. Short turnaround, weird offense. We have dudes on defense-- that's what was so maddening.

If you tell me that we hold CCU to 22 points and win the game if we score 10 points on six possessions in the second half, I'm booking a flight to Arizona and looking to see who is my closest relative on the team.

Yeah, I mean you could say it's on Rex for getting beat and holding on that first play. You could say it's on either of those time-outs. You could say a lot of things.

At the end of the day, we were just out coached in a close game.

No way. The offense did nothing in the second half. Here's how the 2nd half drives went:
7 play 56 yard drive ends in FG,
1 play -1 yard drive ends in fumble (the D held CCU to a FG),
8 play 28 yard drive ends in a punt,
5 play 3 yard drive ends in a punt (this drive had Jackson's -30 yard brain fart),
3 play 5 yard drive ends in a punt (should have gone for it on 4th),
7 play 81 yard drive end of half.

If the offense had played a typical game we win by 10+ points.

I... don't disagree at all. It seems to be a case of everyone uncharacteristically shitting the bed at once, unfortunately.
