They are if you are a 5 star athlete I guess. A lot more youth might consider a mission if it were just one year instead of two...special treatment?? Or I guess everyone else can do the same and submit their papers for a two year mission and just come home early...
Is it better than not going at all? Sure. I'm just saying that if my kid publicly said he was going to do the same thing, I'm not sure that his bishop/stake president agree and submit the papers...
I am totally fine with it. Would you rather he didn't go at all?
True, but it is still a huge PR win for the Church. So hopefully they view it as a positive not just for the church but for the kid.
Considering how detrimental mission service is to a college athlete, I'd be okay with a writ large exception for people whose means for funding their higher education depend entirely on their athletic performance. At a minimum, I can sympathize and realize that they sacrifice so much more to go on missions than most of us ever did.

Apparently one year missions are an option now. Who knew?

So everybody has this option when turning in mission papers to say that they are just going to go for one year instead of two? NEVER have I heard of this...
They don't. Likely as not, the letter from SLC will say "It is anticipated that you will serve for a period of 24 months." Only, at 12 months, he'll just go home.
BYU lands arguably the biggest recruit in program history.
How do you serve a mission for just one year...?
Edit: I also read that he plans on graduating HS early and starting his mission in January 2026, but that still means that he doesn't come home until January 2028, right? Everything else that I'm reading is saying that he's planning on being available for the college 2027 season...

you go on a mission. after a year, you go home. Letting everyone know ahead of time, they can plan for it and manage it.

Ryder has said he plans to serve a mission for one year before enrolling in school
