    Schwing!

I saw a podcast (with video) from the Big 12 Locked on Utes channel. The podcaster was trying to get a Ute homer to agree that a recent BYU commit over Utah was a sign of things to come. The Ute homer basically couldn't stop tripping over himself to claim that the recruit wasn't that great and that Utah was loaded at LB. Okay, its fine to say hey we're doing okay at LB, but come on friends. No need to claim this kid isn't great just because he never spoke to your program.

I saw somewhere that he's the third-highest rated recruit signed by BYU in the modern ranking era.

Good insights here by Jeff Hansen about our recruiting, specifically on Tuataga and our 3 pash rushers in this class (so far).

They didn't want to get into any recruiting battles with someone that had other FBS offers. Instead, they went with the "diamond in the rough" strategy. I love it when someone who didn't even make it onto the recruiting trackers (Rivals, 247, etc.) boards ends up being a starter and a good player. But, that's not going to happen very often, and certainly not with every 2 star or below recruit.

I'm sure being in the B12 is helping us to stay in the battle and win recruits with other P5 offers. But, I'm also really liking what I'm hearing and seeing from this new defensive coaching staff.

With all of that praise, we still need to get better (and I think we will). Rivals has the 2024 class currently at #67 and #12 out of the current 14 B12 teams, ahead of Houston and Kansas St. 247 Sports has us at a similar #66 rank. Their B12 ranking for 2024 already leaves off Oklahoma and Texas and adds the PAC newcomers. They put us #12 out of 16, ahead of Utah, Colorado, Houston, and Kansas St. Of course, the transfer portal will continue to play a big role as well (see Colorado). 247 Sports lists BYU as #20 in the 2023 transfer portal rankings, putting us at #2 in the current B12.

It's going to be a bit of a transition to the B12, but it looks like we are definitely on the upswing with the talent that we are bringing in!
I had heard that the previous staff was gun shy about highly-ranked recruits. I have no problem with trying to find diamonds in the rough, but that shouldn't be the primary recruiting strategy.
